Scale I Build

  1. Hello I'm going to build this kit to mark the 60th anniversary of the model. I will take pictures and share my experiences as I build. I made an unboxing video where you can see the parts. Based on the 3in1 option, I'm not sure how I'm going to put it together. If you have already made this kit, please tell me what I need to pay attention to. Thank you.
  2. Built this up from the Scott Sharp Rain-X Camaro kit...no real problems with the kit...the decals were pooched, so had a little fun with it. Oh ya, I had to grind about a 1/4" off the front of the dash where it meets the inside of the window Decals camre from Mike's decals.com and are Ace Decals, There are enough on the sheet to do another,...maybe an actual '66 Chevelle next time? Line O tape supplied the 1/32" red pin stripe tape, but I have some 1/64" on it's way,... so I may replace For some reason my Tamiya flat gloss XF 86 dried semi gloss on the tire sidewalls...hmm Primer and paints, Duplicolor, cleared with Alclad Aqua Gloss Clear ALC 600 Always loved the colour combo on his cars.. Cheers Oops ....admins if you feel the need to move me to NASCAR ...thats cool
  3. My second Ken Schraeder build - this time the 1990 Lumina wearing Fred Cady decals. Far from my best and not visible in the photos thankfully - somehow I forgot to park the shell under my usual ice cream carton 'drying bay' as the Johnsons Klear / Future was going-off, so the d*mn thing does have a lot of dust particles and it bugs the h*ll out of me. Thanks for taking the time to look and / or comment, please feel free to hurl any abuse, ask any questions or offer any comments. Already got the next non-NASCAR build on the bench stand by for that very soon. AFN Ian.

    '98 Firebird

Second completion this week was this out of the box build of Revell's fourth gen' Firebird. Paint is Tamiya Metallic Orange straight from the rattle-can, looks to my eye like a perfect shoe-in for GM's 'Sunset Orange'. Not too much else to say except I didn't realise until I saw these photo's that the Turtle Wax was still hiding in some of the recesses... it's fixed now and I've also run a black wash in to the door joints which looks much better. All comments, questions and criticism welcomed as usual. AFN Ian.

    '68 Firebird

Started just three weeks ago, and here it is 'Under Glass' - Not bragging at all, in the 'workbench' section I did call this a "Clear the bench" build. Part of the reason for the speed of this project is my enthusiasm for the project - I really like Firebirds, the other reason is the quality of the kit, in my opinion Revell produced such a superb quality product it's actually quite difficult for an average modeller like me to scr*w-it-up. Learning points, well I asked here and on another couple of sites about varnishing over an already very smooth & glossy finish, I took the advice from most folks and applied those extra clear coats and it worked-out... so learning point #1, be brave and with the correct tools and a little luck the finish you want, you can achieve !! Learning point #2, I need to re-learn my BMF 'skills' next time around . Thanks for taking the time to look and/or comment, and as ever all comments, criticism and questions welcome. Ian.
  9. Following all the anticipation and 'prep' for the Cambridge Show which took place over Armistice weekend (same as the UK Nationals) and last week simultaneously 'instructing' & taking a SAR course, that part of my brain that deals with modelling is really working only at 'tick-over'. That in mind, I decided to clear the bench, drag-out a relatively straightforward kit and simply build it from start to finish. So here t'is. Revells 1968 Firebird 400 in it's original 2004 boxing. The roof lining has been sprayed Tamiya acrylic 'Buff' and the chassis & firewalls Tamiya 'Satin Black' enamel. The body has been primered with Tamiya grey just this morning and will be left alone for a day or so to fully cure before rubbing back and polishing ready for the first coat of glossy black. Not certain whether in 1968 the red interior was available as an option with the black body colour, but even if it wasn't for overall effect, black with a red interior is really hard to beat and in my opinion, so classy. The bonus is that the red graphic stripes are in the kit, so it's sort of a 'no brainer' for me. Hopefully at the end of the process it will look something like this: Stay tuned & let's see !! Ian.
