  1. Here is a little video on how I make red line tires.
  2. I paint mostly with acrylics. Is there a specific component of acrylic primer which sets it apart from using, say a flat grey or flat white acrylic paint? Does anyone just prime with an acrylic (name your colour) flat coat before applying their acrylic colour coat? My apologies for being lazy. I guess I just need to do a spoon test to find out the answer to this question. I hope all of my fellow forum members are having a happy and restful holiday break.
  3. I'm starting to use mixes of Tamiya acrylic paint for airbrushing. What went wrong here? The surface: styrene spoon wetsanded with 400 then sprayed with white Tamiya Fine Surface Primer (L). The mix: Tamiya water clean-up acrylic in bottles 1 part X-13 (medium-dark metallic blue) 3 parts X-11 (chrome silver) 1 part X-22 (clear gloss) X-20A thinner (eyeball ratio to dilute for airbrushing) The spray: Iwata Eclipse at 20 psi For comparison, there is a spoon test of gloss black at the left of the photo shot under the same conditions. It's Model Master 1747 diluted with Testors Airbrush Thinner. The Tamiya makes a nice satin finish but I want it to be 1961-era glossy on an engine and frame. I could clear coat it but I'd rather figure out how to make the mix glossy.
  4. Hi, I'm painting an AMT 1985 Dodge Daytona. I got it because it was low priced, and I wanted back in the hobby since I put together stuff when I was a kid. Back then all I had was Testor's enamel paint (late '70s and '80s). Now I have acrylic, and I'm using cheapo Apple Barrel from Walmart. I've read everywhere about people's opinion on paints, love, hate and all that about acrylics, and some of the problems I'm having. I used a Rust-Oleum dark primer (for plastic). Works great. But, long story short, I have to paint part of the engine parts yellow. The paint is gloopy, gloppy, and absolutely will not cover the primer. No matter how many coats and how thick I put the paint on, the black primer always shows through, when the acrylic dries. That and I end up just pushing the paint around. I know it's black and yellow is lighter, but should it really be that hard? I haven't thinned the paint for the gloppy thick problems and the paint ridges because I figure thinning would be even less coverage. First, I don't mind spending some more for better paint if I have to, but I've read other people that claim they have all the good luck with them or some other acrylic. Thanks for any help.
  5. I was wondering if anyones had any experience with this the MM Clear Blue Acrylic paint? Local hobby shop sold out of Testors Transparent Blue spray paint and suggested I try this this color out. It looked a little darker and opaque in the bottle. I've used Testors Transparent Blue for years, and I've decanted it before to use for brushing. And its always looked completely clear blue in the bottles. So before I buy some to try, I was wondering if anyone has used this color before, and can you tell me if it does have that candy transparent color to it and light? Or is it a darker blue but clear? If the color is anything like the regular Transparent Blue, I'd be willing to switch over to this one and spray through my airbrush. I'm just looking for more of that candy side of the color. My hobby shop said they can't get the transparent blue right now so they said this would work. I don't know though.. the lady who suggested it was wearing a sweater with kittens on it and gluing some popsicle sticks making a house. I don't think she gets down on some candy paint jobs.
