robiwon Posted April 14, 2015 Posted April 14, 2015 Now that the Hasegawa 348 is done, this is moving on to the workbench. I got this off eBay for $16 and change, not bad for this kit. The kit was still sealed, never opened. Here's what I found inside. Vinyl tire resting on this for 30 years! Window also had a nasty melt spot. After sanding, polishing and a few dips in Future...
bobthehobbyguy Posted April 14, 2015 Posted April 14, 2015 I've seen tire burn when the tires were loose and the glass wasn't in plastic but I've never seen them do it through the plastic bag. Nice job on the glass. Keep up the good work.
afx Posted April 14, 2015 Posted April 14, 2015 I'll be watching Robert. I have this kit in the stash and have done a little work to it so far. I look forward to see what you do with it.
robiwon Posted April 14, 2015 Author Posted April 14, 2015 So far I have sanded, puttied, and sanded away the burn marks on the deck lid and deck lid sides (very small). I do have the fender flares and front and rear ends attached. I'll post some pics of that tonight. I'll be grabbing a set of Fujimi wheels and tires to replace the stock kit parts.
robiwon Posted April 14, 2015 Author Posted April 14, 2015 No particular car or replica. Thinking red over matte black or all matte black with red racing stripes.
Dirty Dave Posted April 14, 2015 Posted April 14, 2015 I like that you're really having fun with this.
robiwon Posted April 14, 2015 Author Posted April 14, 2015 Gotta put the serious stuff aside and have fun once in a while!!
robiwon Posted April 15, 2015 Author Posted April 15, 2015 Here's a shot of the body. No, I will not be using these wheels/tires.
Dirty Dave Posted April 15, 2015 Posted April 15, 2015 (edited) Something similar to those wheels and tires would look good, though... perhaps with a bit of offset/width stagger. Edit: just occurred to me that in matte black, it'd be cool to set it up with a bunch of electronics countermeasures like one of the modern Gumball Rally cars. Edited April 15, 2015 by Dirty Dave
rsxse240 Posted April 15, 2015 Posted April 15, 2015 I have the 308 B.B. kit and was thinking about flares and big wheels. I'm liking what you're doing here
robiwon Posted April 15, 2015 Author Posted April 15, 2015 (edited) Thanks guys. I think I'm going to grab these off eBay for this build. I wish someone did photoetch for the 308 scripts. Closest I can come is PE for the 328. I can't even find decals for the 308 unless I buy one of the Magnum PI kits I bet. I did a Google image search for Gumball Rally cars. Some pretty wicked paintjobs on a lot of those!!! Edited April 15, 2015 by robiwon
robiwon Posted April 18, 2015 Author Posted April 18, 2015 O.K. grabbed these tonight off eBay. Should be here in a few weeks as they are coming from Japan. Man, I wish I had a well stocked hobby shop nearby!
robiwon Posted April 19, 2015 Author Posted April 19, 2015 Body in primer. Paint job will be satin black with red racing stripes. I think I'll do the rims black with the centers red to tie into the bodies paint job.
robiwon Posted April 19, 2015 Author Posted April 19, 2015 (edited) Thanks for all the comments guys! Red laid down, stripes masked off and clear coated to seal them. Next up is the satin black by Tamiya. Also made new exhaust tips too. Edited April 19, 2015 by robiwon
MPi-KM Posted April 19, 2015 Posted April 19, 2015 Does that kit have any engine detail or is it a curbside?
robiwon Posted April 19, 2015 Author Posted April 19, 2015 (edited) Strictly a curbside. It has a better body shape than the Magnum P.I. kit by Revel, although that is a GTS. I thought about grabbing another Racer or the stock one and marrying the body with a Hasegawa 328 chassis. This is not my build, but it's the stock Monogram kit. Edited April 19, 2015 by robiwon
robiwon Posted April 21, 2015 Author Posted April 21, 2015 Thanks Dave! Thinking about adding a red tape line down the side belt line in the groove. I may give it a shot. If I don't like it I can remove it.
robiwon Posted May 9, 2015 Author Posted May 9, 2015 (edited) Finally got the wheels and tires mounted. Had to make custom axles out of clear acrylic rod. Added the red tape stripe down the side, looks pretty good I think, ties the color to the side of the car. Still a few more details to finish up this weekend. Edited May 9, 2015 by robiwon
Yo Jutt Posted May 9, 2015 Posted May 9, 2015 Great job on those stripes!! Like where this is going!!
robiwon Posted May 10, 2015 Author Posted May 10, 2015 Calling this one done. Finished adding the rest of the photo etch and the emblem stickers. Love those things, much better than decals as they are 3 dimensional emblems. Here is a teaser pic, more beauty pics coming latter today once I get a sheet of poster board.
