Model Cars Magazine Forum

Hello all. I've been lurking for a few months. A friend of mine has recommended this forum to me dozens of times, and when I ask him silly questions, he often links to a thread here where my question has been hashed out already. So I've been reading here for a little while.

I have been modeling off and on since I was a kid, usually going into spurts interrupted by life stuff, but the current run has been non-stop for about 12 or 13 years. My main focus has always been airplanes, some figures, and the occasional scifi subject. The last car I built was the first model I ever built - some old Monogram Ford my granddad picked up for me at a Ben Franklin store. But my wife has decided she likes car models, therefore I must like car models, and started a build a few months ago. It has been much more fun that I anticipated, but calls on all sorts of skills that are completely new to a longtime airplane builder. So I am learning new stuff every day.

Hi Snake.

Welcome to the forum. As an airplane modelers you would already have most of the needed skills. We auto modelers are always borrowing techniques from plane and armor modelers. I think the biggest difference is our paint ... no one else needs such shiny, smooth paint. But then, there's weathering and rat rods!

The painting is what always intimidated me about building cars! That and the bare metal finishing. Airplane modeling is very fiddly, and a lot can go wrong, but multi-colored finishes in flat with decals are much easier - none of this layering of coats and polishing.

I hear ya .. painting is what I dislike most about building. It's been since about 1960 when I used my first spray can on a model car .. I'm still learning. But, I'm a car nut and will never go back to any other kind of model .. don't hold me to that ..

Welcome Harry... :) ...been building anything I can get my hands on for over 40 years here but auto related ones are my favorites. I also restore promos. I still paint my trim never had any luck with the foil myself...maybe someday Ill try it again? You being a aircraft builder you possess a skill I need to learn more about...weathering.

Welcome to the site Harry. I live nearby in your area not far from the city. Hey, if you're looking for some modeling friends to hang out with and share in the hobby, there are several of us auto/ truck model builders in the Memphis area and we are part of the Riff Raff Modelers club of Memphis. We hold a meeting once a month over at the Mid-South Hobbies store over on Old Summer Road. You're probably familiar with it. Our next meeting is this coming saturday ,9th, in the evening and you're welcome to join in.

Thanks everyone!

Hey Matt! Midsouth Hobbies has been my hangout for 15 years going strong now. Don was even best man at my wedding. :) We've probably seen or talked to each other there. I'll probably be there this Saturday afternoon.

Emmo, John Mahaffey and James Hartley were tickled pink when I told them I was doing cars for a change.
