Looking for an engine to use in my 50 Chev project, I rummaged through my parts boxes and found that the only motor I have with an auto on it is the hemi that came in the Dart kit. So I decided to see if I could pinch one from the full kits I have waiting for attention. Found AMT's 34 Street Rod that says it has a small block chev backed by a GM 700 R4 auto. BINGO!!!

Here is what the write up on the instructions are:

And here is a pic of the engine/trans in the kit:

And here is what a GM 700 R4 actually looks like:

So. WHY YOU DO THIS TO ME AMT??? I though we were friends :(

like seriously. I have about 20 engines in my parts box and apart from the dart auto, which would be a torque flight if I am not wrong and is no use mating to a chev, every other motor has a manual box behind it.

The Revell 64 Impala has an automatic. That's the only Chevy I can think of off the top of my head. A couple of other GM's come to mind - AMT's 69 Hurst Olds/442 (molded separatly but the only choice) and Revell's 72 Olds which has a choice of auto or manual. Not sure what types of autos they are, I'm not an expert on them...

A couple of Fords I can think of have autos, the 5.0 crate motor in Revell's 32 fords. The 64 Thunderbolt Fairlane has a choice of manual or automatic.

Mopar I don't know as well, there's the Hemi Dart as mentioned above. The Revell 68/69 Charger has a separate transmission, but I can't remember if they give you a choice. The Revell new-tool Charger funny cars have a really nice one.

I'm no expert as to what types any of these are maybe more knowledgeable folks can fill us in. Maybe we can try to start up a comprehensive list of all the automatics out there in plastic.

Thanks for the reply Brett.

Apparently the 37 ford kit has a small block with auto as well. I don't really want to have to buy a kit just to source the trans. And I have plans for the hemi already.

Currently looking at resin sites.

But still... AMT?

P.S. Just looked at that megahobby site in your sig line. Wow.

The 37 ford from Revell is 1/24 scale keep that in mind when making your selection. I believe the Revell 53 Chevy, has a powerglide transmission attached to the 409 engine, that could be what your looking for.

The original MPC '68 and I think '69 Camaros had BBCs with Turbo Hydros. I think some other MPC Chevies of the time had the TH, too.

I also noticed how tough it is to find auto transmissions in kits. For instance, I have original 1968 - 1976 full size Chevys to build. They all come with 454 4 speeds! Not exactly how I remember those cars, nor how I want to build the entire line of them!

I see the Morgan transmissions as part of the solution, but it would be nice to find engine/trans combos like a 283 with a power glide, 327s etc. The two I owned in real life, a 1970 Impala coupe and a 1971 Belair sedan both had the 350/350 combo, probably was the most common.

It appears the only game in town for a 327 with a powerglide is the Revell 64 impala, what Engine& trans combo comes in the 66 impala?

Stay, finding a Hydra- matic shouldn't be the end of the world . There is a nice one in the AMT 68 Nova , although it's mated to a 454 . I sliced and diced it to a 350 .

I can think of several kits with GM automatics in them, some are recent production, others aren't. a short list off the top of my head; AMT '72 Nova, 350/TH350, MPC '78-'82 Chevrolet Stepsides/MPC/AMT '84 GMC 350/TH350. That one does have a regular tailshaft, the 4x4 adapter is part of the transfer case, MPC '78 El Camino/GMC Cabellaro, 350/TH350. I think this one might have also been the base for the later AMT l Camino SS kit. MPC '80 Monte Carlo 350/TH350, Revell Caprice/Impala SS, LT-1 350/TH700R4, AMT C1500 454SS, 454/4L80E, Revell Tri-5 Chevies (new tool) 265/283/Powerglide is included in all versions. Revell '55 Bel Air (old tool) option engine 409/Powrglide, Revell '53/54 Sedan/Sedan Delivery, 409/Powerglide, Revell S10 pickup/GMC Syclone, 4.3 V6/TH700R4.

I'm building one of AMT's 68 Roadrunner kits. I'm building it for a friend. He still has the one he bought when he came home from Vietnam. I can't find a 727 to save my life. You would also think every Mopar built had a Hemi in it. His is a 383 automatic. The 440 is fine for the motor too bad every Mopar that didn't have a Hemi had a 6 pack.

Seconding Mark's recommendation of Morgan Automotive Detail. I've bought several of their automatic transmissions, and they do top-quality work. The 727 is especially nice, as it mates right up to the Revell 68/9 Charger engine, no cutting or fitting required.

Thanks for all the info peeps!

I have talked to a guy that I bought a few kits off a couple weeks ago and he has an AMT 70 Monte Carlo with a 454 and auto in it so will get that from him. Then I can still build the kit later with one of my other engines. The 50 just really needs to be an auto!

As for the 53 from revell, I have an early one of them and it has the 348 chev with a rather dodgy looking auto yes, and the 54 panel has the same engine/trans I believe but is stated as being a 409.

But it still doesnt answer why AMT has stated they have an auto in the kit when it is clearly supplied with a muncie 4 speed?

Maybe for the same reason their '65 Chevelle wagon has a 4-speed, but only two pedals on the floor.

Come to think of it, I believe several kits have the wrong number of pedals for the transmission included.

Like all the full size Chevys done between 1970-76

Revell's Police/Fire/Taxi Caprice snap kit, later re done as a '94 Impala SS, has a pretty good representation of a 5.7L engine with 700R4 automatic tranny.

The 1996 Impala SS has the late model automatic, along with the altered nomad impala wagon. hope this helps. jeff marsh.
