player Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 Hi All - Just need some help with reference to a diecast model that i intend to repaint. I'm using 320 sandpaper however its not removing all the paint coats and primers. I used some paint remover with a brush and got some results in some spots. ANy advice would be great
Art Anderson Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 Aircraft-grade paint stripper. it's made for stripping paint from non-ferrous metals, and won't damage Zamak, which is the metal alloy used in casting pretty much every diecast model car. Art
sjordan2 Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 Art just posted the most reliable way, and this subject has been discussed in detail before (it really belongs in the Question & Answer topic down the page). Here's a pretty good discussion of the issue, which becomes more illuminating the further down you read. http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=76226&hl=%2Brepainting+%2Bdiecast
player Posted June 30, 2015 Author Posted June 30, 2015 Hi Thank you for your responses. Where I am this aircraft grade paint stripper is not readily available. Any other options?
sjordan2 Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 I think you will find other options if you read the link I posted above.
chunkypeanutbutter Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 I used regular paint thinner with xylene, readily available at any Walmart, Home Depot, Lowes, etc. Took nearly all the paint off one car I did in about two days.

Brizio Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 Paint stripper, some big grocery store carry it too. If not you can find it a the hardware store. Use protections with it (gloves, eye goggle).
Mike Kucaba Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 I use and reccommend the orange scented stripper at Home Depot and others. Has stripped metal clean where others did not. You can use it in your house and wash it off in the sink. By it in the jug and brush it on. After you strip the paint though you may be shocked at why it was so thick. Some diecast really look bad under that paint.
Longbox55 Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 If you can get it, Simple Green will strip die cast as well, though it will discolor it. It won't dissolve it like the lye based degreasers used for stripping plastic.
