drodg Posted July 24, 2015 Posted July 24, 2015 I took a look at my 65 AMT kit last night and I have a Sean Carpenter 2+2 convertible body with a chassis also. The AMT kit is obviously too long but the chrome rear panel does have Pontiac on it and not Bonneville. The problem is those Bonneville tailights, I think that has frustrated me over the years when I think about doing my resin conversion with the convertible body. The interior from the 2+2 AMT kit is too long also if I remember right with the long wheelbase on the AMT kit. So I would think the AMT Grand Prix kit would be better for the interior but is the trim level incorrect for a 2+2? Let me know.
Motor City Posted July 24, 2015 Posted July 24, 2015 Fender skirts were optional on the full-size Pontiacs that didn't have them standard. Why anyone would put them on a 2+2 is beyond me. I've seen a '66 2+2 at Greenfield Village in Dearborn with skirts. Regarding the '65 Bonneville kit being converted into a 2+2, I thought they would have been better off to correct the driver's side roofline than spent all that tooling expense trying to convert it to the shorter wheelbase 2+2. I don't know why they don't re-issue the '65 Bonneville convertible kit.
drodg Posted July 24, 2015 Posted July 24, 2015 Art may want to pipe in here but if you wanted to correct the back panel and rear bumper how would you suggest doing it? I would obviously need a second rear panel but how would you graft the section on both sides in?
unclescott58 Posted July 24, 2015 Posted July 24, 2015 A couple of things. I didn't really mind the long wheelbase on AMT's 2 + 2. In model form I still say that if a person wasn't told about the 2 + 2 being based on AMT's Bonneville, most people would not have known there was anything wrong with the kit, length wise at least. I was more upset with their 2 + 2, thinking they had needlessly wrecked their perfectly good Bonneville tool to offer it. It seems that they did not wreck the old Bonneville dies. I believe the Bonneville has been reissued at least once since the 2 + 2 was last on the market. As far as fender skirts. Yes, they were optional on any full-size Pontiac in '65 that didn't come with them as standard equipment. Except wagons. And I love the looks of a full-size Pontiac hardtops or convertibles with skirts built from 1965 through 1970. Including the '65 through '67 2 + 2s. They didn't work on the plain sedans for some reason. Scott
