Brent Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 Played around with the Lathe today. Turned 4 slugs out and started messing around with a fifth (Prototype if you will). The tapering of the holes didn't work out how I wanted on the prototype. I will put back in the lathe and use an end mill to clean it up again. I think it has some potential. Going to spin up some center caps as well..
chunkypeanutbutter Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 I need a lathe in our garage just for this kind of stuff.
58 Impala Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 Really nice work. I would love to get a mini lathe and give it a try, but my current funds don't allow it.
Pete J. Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 From the last pictures, I am guessing that you are using both a mill and a lathe. The positioning for the holes suggests a mill with a turn table.
John Clutch Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 (edited) Nice job!I have a microlux 7x16 lathe myself, best $800 I ever spent. It has a brushless motor and belt drive. VERY quiet (but the autofeed is plastic gears and is a bit noisy, but nothing like an other mini lathe Ive had) and plenty of power. I used a 3/4" drill on aluminum 1-1/2" deep and not even the slightest bog. Very tough little "toy". Ive made combustion chambers and modified pistons for 46cc two stroke engines, and the unit is very accurate. I highly recommend it. Edited July 17, 2015 by John Clutch
Brent Posted July 17, 2015 Author Posted July 17, 2015 Thanks guys. Lathe is a Craftex (Same machine is branded under different names as well) Mill Lathe combo but only the lathe was used and a dividing head. I am by no means a machinist. I get by. I bought this to be used for making jigs for my surface grinder. It has more than paid for it's self. I thought it was time to start "Playing" with this thing and have some fun with it. By mounting the drill in the chuck and offsetting the rim in the dividing head I can do the hole patterns.
my80malibu Posted July 18, 2015 Posted July 18, 2015 It looks similar to a Smithy machine, very nice job on those by the way.
blunc Posted July 19, 2015 Posted July 19, 2015 I am quite envious of the tools in your photo. I need to figure out how to make some wheel sleeves for some 1/32 scale projects and don't have the space nor the funds for proper tools (lathe/mill).
dartman Posted July 20, 2015 Posted July 20, 2015 Those wheels look great so far.I have a small wood lathe that I use for making pens and bowls.Every now and then I use it to make something for a model.Being so small,I have to get creative with set up and of course there is no feed.Things come out ok but not like when I had my small metal lathe.I have also made some wood bits for models but once they are painted ya cant tell.
Pete J. Posted July 20, 2015 Posted July 20, 2015 Heck man, with a mill and lathe that size you should be turning full sized wheels for real cars!
