Johnt671 Posted August 31, 2015 Posted August 31, 2015 (edited) Starting on my next build. I found a big block motor in my spare parts that fit with just a little trimming. I'm going with a late 60s early 70 street /gasser look. Is this a 428 or 429. It came from an AMT Shelby Mustang GT 500? I'm not a big Ford guy so I'm not sure. I'm work on the stance now, and I found some tires and wheels that I think will look good. Edited August 31, 2015 by Johnt671
cobraman Posted August 31, 2015 Posted August 31, 2015 That is one big engine for that little car. Should be a cool build.
Johnt671 Posted September 3, 2015 Author Posted September 3, 2015 Working on the stance so I could fit some big tires on the back, and I used a straight axle on the front, but the stance was all wrong for the gasser look I want. I had to come up a different way to lower the back some and raise the nose higher. Now I'm waiting for the glue and paint to dry to see if what I did will work. The rake in the picture did look cool though.
vintagercr Posted September 3, 2015 Posted September 3, 2015 I will be following this one. I had a 1:1 with 302. Now have a sedan delivery with a 144
Johnt671 Posted September 4, 2015 Author Posted September 4, 2015 Here's the new stance, not what I wanted but the best my parts box could do.
disabled modeler Posted September 4, 2015 Posted September 4, 2015 Looks cool John...wish they would have included the bed top from the original issue of this one.
Johnt671 Posted September 5, 2015 Author Posted September 5, 2015 Started doing a little more detail work om the motor. Here's a picture before I started. Progress so far. I'm working on spark plug wires, I have a prewired dizzy, but haw do you get the little holes in the head to slip the wire boots in? I tried wireing one motor but it didn't work out so well.
MGL Posted September 5, 2015 Posted September 5, 2015 I'm working on spark plug wires, I have a prewired dizzy, but haw do you get the little holes in the head to slip the wire boots in? I tried wireing one motor but it didn't work out so well.I use a drill bit just bigger than the wires in a pin vise but first I google images of the cylinder head I'm working with to see the angle and spacing of the plugs. You can kind of figure it out based on the layout of the exhaust manifold or headers, if the center cylinders are next to each other the plugs will be between the first and second exhaust port, and the third and fourth. If the ports are evenly spaced the plugs will be just in front of or behind each port. The other thing I do is google the firing order for the engine. Ford is odd in that they number the cylinders 1 through 4 on the passenger side and 5-8 on the drivers side, as far as I know most ford v-8s are 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8 and the distributor rotates counter-clockwise, but I have never worked on a 428 so you may want to look that up.
Johnt671 Posted September 9, 2015 Author Posted September 9, 2015 The motor is ready to go in. I decided to try wiring on my next build. It's starting to look like something now.
Johnt671 Posted September 15, 2015 Author Posted September 15, 2015 Interior almost done. The instrument panel on the dash were almost not there so I sanded them off and made a custom panel using decals. Now finished. The first coat of Future is on the body, and the trim is done. Crager mags are now on the front, but I'm not sure if I'll stay with steelies on the back or use Cragers there, too. If I use Cragers I'll need to file them down a little to fit the tires. I'm waiting for some sponsor decals I ordered for the back window, and a battery tray to mount the battery in the bed. It's a good time to wash some of the chrome pats while I'm waiting. Getting close now.
Johnt671 Posted September 23, 2015 Author Posted September 23, 2015 Almost done. When I finish it tomorrow I'll take it outside and get some better pictures. It looks like the hood is resting on the front on the radiator cross piece is. Maybe a little file work. I also need to finish the exhaust pipes so they come out under the rear bumper.
Johnt671 Posted September 25, 2015 Author Posted September 25, 2015 It took longer then I thought to get the hood to fit right. I had to pull the front grill/bumper off and knocked a few small parts off the motor. It's done now, got the hood looking better, and I'll get some good finished pictures and post the in the Under Glass section tomorrow. Thanks for following the build.
