Picked up AMT's new (old) Curly's Gasser '40 Willys coupe. I've built variations of this kit in the past. I've always built it as a street rod. Now I going to build it as a gasser, and this brings up a question. How many seats are normally in a gasser? The instructions only show putting in one seat. The driver's seat. Yet the kit also comes with a second seat for a passenger. I know one would never need the passenger seat for racing. But, I think I once read a passenger seat was still required in certain cases. What is the deal on this? Do I just put in one seat? Or two?

An NHRA-legal gasser would have two seats (or a full-width bench seat).  Match racers or other sanctioning bodies may have been a different story.

Correct. Gassers were "theoretically" street/roadworthy cars, so had to have full interiors, two seats, lights, horn, starter/battery, and so forth.

Altereds didn't even have to have the pretense of being anything other than dedicated drag monsters, so no lights, passenger seat, etc.

We had a huge "gasser meet" this past July and I know one of the driver/owners from Eastern Pennsylvania and asked him 'bout it. Sure the earlier gassers were required to have TWO seats, but this driver says the rules have eased up a bit and ONE seat is okay. I usually build my gassers models to represent the gassers of the mid-60's and always install two seats.
