Merkur XR4Ti Posted November 8, 2015 Posted November 8, 2015 Somewhat silly question, but when you order wheels through Modelhaus, do they come with the wheel backs? I am restoring an old Johan builtup and the model's wheel backs are cemented to the wheels so I can't separate them. It would be very convenient if the backs came with the wheels I'd like to order. Thanks.
mikemodeler Posted November 8, 2015 Posted November 8, 2015 Wheel backs are ordered separately, unless the wheels state that they come with the backs. If you know what wheels you are ordering, a quick phone call to Don or Carol will get you the correct answer on the wheel backs.
Merkur XR4Ti Posted November 9, 2015 Author Posted November 9, 2015 That part I'm looking at is described as a "promo wheel set." Would that have the backs? This is for a Johan '64 Cadillac.
1930fordpickup Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 The paper catalog says Promo Wheels w/Hubs. Are you looking on line?
ChrisBcritter Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 Promo wheels for Jo-Han's '64 Caddy won't need backs; they're a snug fit in the tires (which are same as the kit tires) and the axle holder extends out to the chassis. Outwardly they'll look just like the kit parts but you may need thicker axles.
Crusader101 Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 Promo wheels are all one unit with a thicker axle. On the other hand, the full wheel cover requires a wheel back and uses the thin axle. This is what originally came in model kits whereas the promo cars had the 0ne piece promo hub/thicker axle.
CapSat 6 Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 Normally, when the Modelhaus catalog lists a certain wheel as "promo", they're a wheel with a receiver for a large-diameter axle cast into it- in other words, a direct copy of the promo piece. Most promo wheels I've seen (MPC and Jo Han '60's Mopars) have one piece wheels, with no separate backs, press-fitted into vinyl tires. When I have ordered promo wheels from them, they were truly promo replacements- if I wanted to use them on a kit build, I had to saw off the receivers in the backs of them.
Merkur XR4Ti Posted November 9, 2015 Author Posted November 9, 2015 Thanks for all the info, guys, that's super helpful.
