louie Posted December 20, 2015 Posted December 20, 2015 Hey Roadrunner, just wanted to let you know that I checked the hood on the gtx model that I gave to my nephew and guess what , yep the same gap is present. I'm trying, I'm learning, now I know next time what to look for. I just figured I'd let you or anyone else know that it was not just your kit with the hood gap. You did a really nice job fixing your's and I would not have known how to fix this issue if it wasn't for watching you do it. Thank you. Jeff
Roadrunner Posted December 20, 2015 Author Posted December 20, 2015 Just in case it matters to you. But the hood is 1968, If not Carry on 1969 has the vents open towards the topSooner or later (perhaps sooner), I'll also be snatching a '68 Roadrunner, so that hood should work OK, I think? If not, I may consider sourcing another hood. The real problem is, I'll begin painting this in early January, but won't get the '68 until, at the earliest, late January, so I may just use what I have.

Jeff I think we're both learning here, Jeff, as I'm sort of a "born again car modeler" myself.
tubbs Posted December 21, 2015 Posted December 21, 2015 best looking musclecar out there (and the road runner of course). had quite a few of them in my time. hey, if your looking for a hood.... just saying..... I may know someone who has one, or 2, or 6... hehe. GOTTA LOVE THEM MOPARS!!!
tubbs Posted December 21, 2015 Posted December 21, 2015 so, I got curious, I looked at 4 different versions of the 69 GTZX (the original issue, the second issue, the pro street and the convertible) and they all have the proper hood except for the original issue (which is the one Kevin pictures) which has the 68 hood. the engraving on the proper hood has something to be desired also. maybe a Johan resin piece is in order.

Roadrunner Posted December 21, 2015 Author Posted December 21, 2015 I realize full well that some of the most sophisticated painters on the forums use nothing more elaborate than an old coat hanger for painting, but I still felt the need to grab a Tamiya paint stand, so I could see what all the fuss was about. I must say, I’m pretty happy with how stable this arrangement is, plus it rotates, and I had not known that before.
426-Hemi Posted December 21, 2015 Posted December 21, 2015 -Didn't the early '69's have the SAME hood as the '68's did? Wasn't till mid year the working "Air Grabber" came to use on the Plymouth Roadrunners..... SO this could very well be a true 1969 GTX model, As being an early year (Pre, June) 1969..... As the grille is right for a '69 GTX!

Geno Posted December 21, 2015 Posted December 21, 2015 That's gonna be sweet. I have this one in the wings.

chadrob30 Posted December 22, 2015 Posted December 22, 2015 Yes mid year '68 into '69 had the '68 hoods.
tubbs Posted December 22, 2015 Posted December 22, 2015 Yes mid year '68 into '69 had the '68 hoods.well, I'd say if that is the hood you have, there is no problem using it. I don't thin I have ever seen a 69 runner/GTX with a 68 hood. I know from the factory that the air grabber was an option (standard on the hemi). if you got that, the slats o the top were perforated to let the air in and they were painted orange. if you did not get the air grabber, you had ribbed metal inserts that were panted a flat or satin black. they did introduce the 69 1/2 440+6 road runner mid year and that had a fiberglass lift-off hood. also remember that the 68 hemi models had the big round chrome air cleaner and the 383's had a small round black air cleaner. no air grabber was available in 68. in 69, they went to the orange oval air cleaners but still had the small black round ones for the non air grabber cars.sorry for the babble.... build on!! and you will love that paint stand. just make sure it is on tight to the base. I had it slip off a few times....
Roadrunner Posted January 1, 2016 Author Posted January 1, 2016 Some interesting discoveries here. Hood (I hadn't noticed this before), has a deeply recessed rectangular opening , presumably for a blower or whatever. This in turn has caused stress marks to appear on the hood (best photo I could get, but it's very visible), just owing to wet sanding. I can't even begin to imagine how bad this will get if I don't fill those relief trenches with some CA.
Roadrunner Posted January 1, 2016 Author Posted January 1, 2016 Also, the louver (or vent or whatever it is) on the driver side, has a nasty depression that had gone previously unnoticed. This seems to be a molding issue, not a sink mark. Plymouth (shown on box cover) is not molded on hood, but the fun continues beyond that,...
Roadrunner Posted January 1, 2016 Author Posted January 1, 2016 (edited) Hood, which some say is from the '68 Roadrunner, clearly says 440 in vents, while trunk clearly says Hemi. I'll leave the Hemi script, as there's no way I can highlight the 440 on the hood. Also, the left taillight housing has what I assume is a molding defect that will need to be sorted out before I can paint this, hopefully tomorrow. I have no idea why the trunk looks like I sanded it with 80 grit paper, but I'll need to address that too. Edited January 1, 2016 by Roadrunner
carcrazy19 Posted January 1, 2016 Posted January 1, 2016 Nice work so far. The recess in the hood was for the RR kit if the builder chose to build the custom version. I filled mine in with some styrene which also helps to keep the rectangular imprint from showing through.
Can-Con Posted January 2, 2016 Posted January 2, 2016 Kevin, was that kit open when you got it? I'm asking because I thought all the earlier issues of this kit had the proper hood and they didn't get switched until the RC2 reissues. Anyway, all the early issues of the '69 I had included the correct hood.

Either way I'm cool with it, and intend to begin painting tomorrow.
High octane Posted January 2, 2016 Posted January 2, 2016 Excellent. What a great looking body style, especially the rear end, I just love it. That's all you'll be seein' is the rear end of the car. LOL!
Roadrunner Posted January 2, 2016 Author Posted January 2, 2016 OK, finally the first light color coat is on. Not 100% uniform, but I thought it best to stop here. I have "issues" with patience, so I'm trying to force myself not to be too hasty.
Roadrunner Posted January 2, 2016 Author Posted January 2, 2016 Wet coat just applied, and I must say that it’s a marked improvement. Gloss coat will make it even shinier, then polishing the clear coat should of course “kick it up a notch” further.
Roadrunner Posted January 4, 2016 Author Posted January 4, 2016 On hold again. I realized after I painted the Root Beer, that I need to order some black lacquer for the bottom portions of the car (I want to keep it sort of stock looking), so I'll need to wait for that to arrive before I can proceed further. (I'm beginning to wonder if I'll ever be able to work straight through on one of these models without needing something that I don't have.)
Roadrunner Posted January 7, 2016 Author Posted January 7, 2016 (edited) Second wet coat just applied. There had been numerous sanding marks still evident (poor prep work on my part I guess), but this coat seems to have straightened that out. Edited January 7, 2016 by Roadrunner
