Looking to update/correct the AMT T600A using Ken Smith's article (Car Modeler Jan 93).

He suggested using the rear suspension from the AMT K100 Aerodyne, but that kit is hard to find/expensive, so I was wondering if I could use an air bag suspension from another easier to find or less expensive source. Your ideas, please.

Revell snap w900 - cut it off the frame?

Or an aftermarket resin source?

Worst case, I guess I have time to wait until the Papa truck comes out again.

Revell snap kit (really Monogram) is good Revell of Germany w900 or k100 kits too. Hendickson 4 bag and Reyco 4 bag were available on t600s as well in those days. Millis transfer had several that way. Better ride and lighter.

I used the snap kit 8-bag suspension on this one that I built. The bags and axles are separate from the frame. I did cut round disks out of styrene to top off the bags where they mounted to the frame. It isn't 100% accurate to the real suspension, but it is pretty good, especially for the price.

There has been resin 8 bag KW Airglide 100 suspensions available as Melbourne Model Truck Accessories had one complete with everything you need including axles, they also had the KW Torsion Bar suspension also complete with everything  including axles...but I believe they are out of business since a year or so ago.
So as the others say, the easiest to find and probably most economical (as the resin stuff ain't cheap) is to use the Revell US Snap Kenworth W900 suspension.

One thing come to mind as the Papa Truck was mentioned, if you want to build a correct Papa Truck model you would have an AG 100 air ride suspension left over as the real truck had torsion bar suspension.

Good point in fact any bicentennial vit 200 Kw coe or hood shouldn't have the 8 bag since it didn't exist yet in 1976

Thanks everyone for the information. I think my best bet is the snap w900, unless the timing of the project works with the reissue of the Papa Truck. I plan to get a couple for a future bash project anyway, and I'd have a leftover rear end.

It is too bad MMTA is gone, they had a number of great items.

Check out Auslowe. I'm pretty sure they have the KW airbag setup. Mind you those snappers are pretty cheap.

Also, is the article you're using available anywhere? I googled around for it.

cheers,

No it didn't...but Kenworth had the old Dual Air 4 bag air ride wich I believe came 1961.
I think the torsion bar was more popular tho'

When did the 8-bag suspension that comes in the AMT kit (AirGlide-200?) actually come out?

I don't know exactly when it came out...early 80's maybe...but the first KW 8 bag suspension was called Airglide 100 and I believe that is what the AMT K100 Aerodyne and Revell AG W900 and Revell/Monogram W900 Aerodyne snap kits have...the later Airglide 200 and 400 are a bit different.

Correct the old 4 bag didn't have much travel. The torsion bar could ride well even better than the ag 100 but was a maintainance night mare. I believe the ag 100 came out in 78 or 79 It was upgraded in the 90s with bigger airlines and faster reacting valves. The ag 200 and 400 were much improved versions but the KW 8 bag is still a rougher ride than others on the market. I see alot more newer KWs with the ag400L now than anything . The ag400L is the same as the Peterbilt low leaf and for that matter the KW ag380 is the same as the Pete flex air. All Paccar.
