Jon Cole
Can anyone tell me how to make a Model A hood hinge? All four sections? I really prefer not to buy photoetch piano hinge. I hope someone has done this before. On each side, the top of the hood goes up, and the side panel swings in.
Danno
Jon, I've done it. But, I used a manufactured piano-style hinge that was ultra tiny and worked perfectly. I'll be the first to tell you, it can't be properly done with plastic. It takes three hinge sections, as your illustration shows: one the length of the top/center rib, and one each where the top sections meet the side panels (as shown as the horizontal line in your illustration). Both hood sides of the 1:1 can be 'open' at the same time, creating a "M" figure as seen from the radiator or the cowl, but due to the limitations imposed by the thickness of plastic parts, it can't be done on a 1/24-1/25 model. One can only hope to open one side or the other of the hood at one time. Hope this helps.

Bernard Kron
Jon, I've done it. But, I used a manufactured piano-style hinge that was ultra tiny and worked perfectly. ... Nice! Whose hinges did you use? They look like brass.
Danno
Bernard, They (actually 'it') are/is brass. I got it years ago online from a doll house supply shop in New England. The hinge was about 5 or 6 mm wide, 6 inches long and VERY expensive. So, I only bought one - knowing it would be plenty for one model but figuring I would buy more if it worked well. Needless to say, it worked very well and I was very impressed. I tried to buy a few more, but the supplier had gone out of business! Just in the span of a few weeks. I haven't seen the same hinge since in the U.S., although there's one that is very close available from an English purveyor (ironically, Phoenix Model Developments) and it may well be the same product. Bernard Kron
Thanx Danno. I found them. But... here we go again. Only 7 left! See: http://www.phoenixmodeldevelopments.com/cgi-bin/sh000001.pl?REFPAGE=http%3a%2f%2fwww%2ephoenixmodeldevelopments%2ecom%2f&WD=hinges&PN=The_Phoenix_Miniature_Hinge_Range%2ehtml%23aH850#aH850 The good news is they're only around $10.00 a set with the weak poiund and all. I havenm't had the courage to look at shipping on them. Did you have to buy more than 1 set or, as I assume, did you cut one set up? I believe I have about the same amount left over; enough to do one more hood.I've had the MCG (and other) photoetched hinges, but you (or at least, I) just can't get a good, tight hinge out of them. That's why I continued searching until I found the one I used.
fog cutter
even though the op clearly states he would prefer not to buy pe hinges the discussion seems to have drifted that direction regardless.Hunter Selby manages to get passable results: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLQvtRSYwrFFdqPkyAZ3ZUjkVGOAmuqIax
