lghtngyello03 Posted January 29, 2016 Posted January 29, 2016 (edited) Hey guys. I'm a newb to the airbrush world, as my Paasche Talon TG-3F will arrive today. I will be spraying Tamiya Acrylics, and Decanted TS sprays for my body colors. I have done some searching on here to try to find out if anyone has decanted the TS13 clear and actually shot it through an airbrush. I can't find anything. I did however, find that a bunch of you guys use the X22 Clear. However, some have had issues with this clear coat through and airbrush, and some haven't. My question is, is it possible (or worth it) to decant the TS13 and use it in an airbrush without any issues to my finish? Or, should I just thin the X22 clear and shoot it over the TS sprays, then polish out after a couple of days? I also haven't found a definite answer of what ratio to thin the X22. I have saw that with the other Tamiya acrylics should be thinned to the consistency of milk, or 2 parts paint to 1 part thinner.Any help would be much appreciated. I'm really looking forward to getting my new airbrush and learning how to use it, and pumping out some awesome paint jobs. Scott Edited January 29, 2016 by lghtngyello03
BigTallDad Posted January 29, 2016 Posted January 29, 2016 I've decanted TS-13 and airbrushed it with no issues.
Zoom Zoom Posted January 29, 2016 Posted January 29, 2016 Decanting and airbrushing TS-13 is a piece of cake, and you will get better results than spraying X22 acrylic. You may want to get some of Tamiya's lacquer thinner (notable by having a yellow cap), I add a few drops of the thinner to decanted TS paints, just seems to run through my airbrush better.

Thanks guys for the responses! Bob, Will the X20A thinner work well with thinning their TS sprays as well?
Exotics_Builder Posted January 29, 2016 Posted January 29, 2016 (edited) Thanks guys for the responses! Bob, Will the X20A thinner work well with thinning their TS sprays as well?As stated, I do the same. I do let it gas out for about 15 minutes. I use the trimmed soda straw taped to the cap approach. Since the Tamiya nozzle juts out from the cap a bit, it is easy to align the straw. Always use a respirator when decanting. Not Bob but X20A is not for lacquer. Don't recommend it. I use isopropyl alcohol to thin Tamiya Acrylics. I use their Lacquer thinner for TS paints decanted. Edited January 29, 2016 by Exotics_Builder

ScottI decant and airbrush Tamiya lacquers all the time, including TS-13, never a problem, great paint!

I figured it needed to gas for 30 min to an hr. I plan on doing the soda straw method as well. I figure a respirator will not be needed if I decant this outside, let it gas out in the garage, then bring it in to shoot. Thanks for the comment on the X20A, I take it that this is only used for Acrylics? I'll pick up some of their Lacquer thinner for thinning the clear if needed. Do the TS sprays shoot better if thinned, or is it ready to put in the airbrush and spray after decanting? Edited January 30, 2016 by lghtngyello03
Zoom Zoom Posted January 30, 2016 Posted January 30, 2016 X20A is only for acrylics, it works fine for Tamiya acrylics, but you can also use isopropyl alcohol and sometimes even cheap automotive lacquer thinners to thin Tamiya acrylics. The lacquer thinner works for acrylics and decanted lacquers. You can also use Mr. Hobby/Gunze Mr. Color Thinner, it's nearly the same thing as Tamiya, and you can order big 400ml. bottles of it online, it lasts longer. And if you have any issues with blushing, or spray in cold conditions, you can get Mr. Hobby Mr. Leveling Thinner to slow the drying time. I use the Mr. Color thinners all the time. I find all paints seem to spray a bit better after decanting w/a few drops of thinner.

It helps speed up the dry time as well.
Art Anderson Posted February 1, 2016 Posted February 1, 2016 Decanting and airbrushing TS-13 is a piece of cake, and you will get better results than spraying X22 acrylic. For that matter, I too have great results decanting all Tamiya lacquer colors (TS-13 is simply their lacquer with no pigment added), and airbrushing it. However, due to the nearest hobby shop that stocks any Tamiya paint at all being an hour or more away, I simply use "Kleen Strip" lacquer thinner, which I can get at WalMart, Meijer, even a few paint stores here--it's never failed me yet!Art
