Olskoolrodder Posted February 20, 2016 Posted February 20, 2016 Starting on the next project (finally). AMT’s 1996 Chevy Tahoe snap kit from several years back. This kit was dug up from the ruins of our burned house and other than the box it came in,seems to have survived with no ill effects, though there are a few parts missing, most notibly, the wheels, tires, and rear tail-lights. I wouldn’ thave been using the factory-correct wheels and tires–this will be made into an “in the weeds” street truck–but the missing tail-lights means this won‘t be a simple slam-it-together snap kit… Rather than to try to find a set or a donor kit on eBay or such, which was my first thought (only found 1 listed, not willing to pay what they want just to score a set of lights),but it didn’t take long to decide to take the custom street truck theme a bit more in depth,I’ll be shaving the door handles,3rd brake light, running boards, and the tail lights, filling in the place for the stockers, and molding tails lights from another vehicle in the rear somewhere. Haven’t decided which as of yet,but I’m still waiting on delivery of the wheels/tires that I ordered for this anyways, plenty of time. Before pics… Shaved the running boards off with my trusty razor saw, will smooth them out a bit with sanding sticks and putty if need be. More to come, good to be back at the bench
Belugawrx Posted February 20, 2016 Posted February 20, 2016 Good to have you back at it Stephen. Can't wait to see what you turn this into Try looking at clear red plastic lighter bodies for the right curve to cut Happy modelling Cheers
Olskoolrodder Posted February 20, 2016 Author Posted February 20, 2016 Thanks,Bruce,it's good to be back too That'sa good idear on the lighter body, never woulda thought of that (and just happen to have a couple throw-away red lighters, the kind they give away when you buy a carton.....I'd quit, but started back, sigh ),thanks!
Olskoolrodder Posted February 20, 2016 Author Posted February 20, 2016 (edited) Not sure which set of wheels I want to use on this one (both are Pegasus 23"s)... These (which I just ordered off eBay)... or... (these are the ones I originally had ordered just for this build, but I'm thinking that they'll look equally as good on the other,so now I can' tdecide which wheels for this one,LOL!) Thoughts? Edited February 20, 2016 by Olskoolrodder
Belugawrx Posted February 20, 2016 Posted February 20, 2016 23's eh, hmm..I'm partial to the T thrusts, but,...I think they may look out of scale big when installed,...The Vanquish, I haven't seen on a build yet...If you could,... mock them up and take pics so you can see the final stance etc,...it will help you sort it out,. Carry On Cheers
Olskoolrodder Posted February 24, 2016 Author Posted February 24, 2016 Thanks for the kind words,my friend! I think they'll look ok,most full size SUV's slammed in the weeds run 22"-24" wheels I agree, thinking that I'll just wait for the Chrome T's to come in,save these Vanquish's for another project I'm fixing to jump on. I upgraded my old Dremel tool (was a base model, chordless, had it for a decade) yesterday (bought a Dremel 3000 chorded unit with 5 different speed settings ),so I snuck away to the bench in between daddy duties and ground down all the side molding/trim and the raised door handles... Didn't have time to do much else, hoping to get back to the bench tomorrow (Wednesdays and Thursdays are the wife's weekends though, she's off work, might be too busy with honey-do's ) to get some putty slapped on there and start smoothing it out. Here's a mockup of the Vanquish wheels, and about the ride-height I'm going for... More to come
gatorincebu Posted February 24, 2016 Posted February 24, 2016 I am liking the shaved body. That is old school hot rodding there. Not sure about the in da weeds look?? However I can appreciate the work you are putting into this. Are you going to do a fancy paint job? Be Well Gator
Olskoolrodder Posted February 24, 2016 Author Posted February 24, 2016 (edited) Thanks on the shaving props and kind words,my friend Nothing new or outside the box here, though, that air bagged stance is pretty much the normal in the trucking world both full size and minis, has been for a long time (here's a few pulled form a quick Googling, also check out pretty much any truck magazine not catered specifically to restos or 4x4's,like Truckin',Classic Trucks,Street Trucks, etc),at least since the 90's. They're usually not driven so low (couldn't turn ),just let the air out of the bags when parked. I've owned a couple that were (air) bagged and layed frame, one S10 had a traditional body drop (when I bought it),it would lay body when the bags were dumped As for the paint,I don't really have the skills (or an airbrush) to go too wild,it'll probably be a solid color,or maybe borrow decals from something like Revell's '99 Silverado lowerider. gatorincebu Posted February 24, 2016 Posted February 24, 2016 I understand what you are saying about the trend in street customs for them to ride low and lay down even lower. When I refer to old school .I am talking about the cars done in the 40's -50's and 60's . And yes there were low riders back then as well . But I just grew up liking the different ride heights that they did back then, And now it is just my personal taste. I can appreciate the work you can put into a model to make it ride lower or higher for that matter. And yes I have built both a few times over the years. But I am also enjoying your build thread. Be Well Gator
djmcguire Posted February 25, 2016 Posted February 25, 2016 Not a fan of the Vanquish wheels...I'd go with the Torque Thrusts like in the picture of the dropped red one above. Almost "too much truck" for the small spokes of the Vanquish wheels if you ask me...
Olskoolrodder Posted February 25, 2016 Author Posted February 25, 2016 (edited) I screwed up the "quote" somehow... Gator,I wasn' tthinking old (s'kool) enough, had my brain stuck in the last 20 years,LOL! I meant no offense if any was taken,my friend Daniel, yeah, will definitely be using the Chrome T's whenever the USPS delivers them, will save the Vanquish's for another build (S10/Sonoma or Dodge Dakota) Edited February 25, 2016 by Olskoolrodder

I meant no offense if any was taken,my friend Stephen, Trust me.there was no offense taken. And I certainly didn't mean any. I was just defining if you will .What old school means to me. I am kind of a dinosaur !! being almost 68 years old.. besides it is your model , build it your way. I am enjoying the build thread. And I am learning things as well. So it is all good!! Olskoolrodder Posted February 26, 2016 Author Posted February 26, 2016 They came in yesterday, and with the wife's "weekend" over and her going back to work today, the honey-do's are almost caught up,heeheehee (hoping to get back at it today or tomorrow )
iamsuperdan Posted March 2, 2016 Posted March 2, 2016 I built this kit, and my only complaint was the rear window. Not sure how to make it look more realistic. Still, I like the subject matter, and think this is a great kit of customizing. Love the idea of a frame laying Tahoe.
