crowe-t Posted April 22, 2016 Posted April 22, 2016 I'm looking for some information on how the late '60's - early '70's Cadillac Chassis' were painted.Did they have body color overspray over primer? Were the frame rails painted black? If anyone has pictures that would be great.
Snake45 Posted April 22, 2016 Posted April 22, 2016 I don't know specifically, but GM in general was known to paint frames semigloss black. As far as the floor metal, I dunno, but suspect that "rustproofing" might have been more common on Caddies than other brands, maybe even standard? If you're going with "primer and overspray," remember that most bodies were painted BEFORE they went on the frame, so there should be no overspray on the frame itself. At least that's my understanding of the process. But others might (and probably will) know more.
espo Posted April 22, 2016 Posted April 22, 2016 In addition to Snake's information, GM was known to use various shades of red "Oxide" primer and sometimes various shades of gray prior to the body color application. The difficult part is that this would vary from one production plant to another as well as year to year. It was also not uncommon to order these cars with factory "Undercoating" which was almost like the spray in bed liners we see in pick ups today. I don't know if this helps or confuses what you're after, but it was really all over the map as far as finishes go.
Motor City Posted April 22, 2016 Posted April 22, 2016 I own '68 and '77 Eldorados, and used to own a '71 Eldorado. All were a black (or brownish where undercoating was) underneath, and the chassis were painted a semi-gloss black. The same goes for the '73 Caprice and '76 Regal I used to own, as well as the '63 Le Sabre, '68 Wildcat, '68 Vista Cruiser my parents used to own. My '87 El Camino is the same way. I don't think any of the GM intermediates from '64-'87 (and '88 Monte Carlo) or full-sized cars from mid-'60s to 1976 used a primer color underneath. I don't know about the Novas, Camaros, Firebirds, Corvettes, etc., since I didn't buy cars that small.
BubbaBrown Posted April 23, 2016 Posted April 23, 2016 It depends on how they were made and what kind of paint used. Mopar and ford used enamels and the over spray does not dry as quickly as laquer . Bodies were painted before the marriage with their chassis, so there should be no overspray on gm cars wiyh full frames. Mopar painted their cars before the front k member and engine and drive train were installed, with enamel and over spray the rockers should have a mist of paint. not entirely painted like for show cars. just a mist that gets finer the farther away from the rocker panel. most people tend to over do it on models. on chassis and parts most companies used some form of protective coating, paint ,wax, undercoating what ever was cost effective, most in some form of black. they weren't building master pieces.
