Nice work though, an interesting project. For the more budget conscious the Ace also came with a 2.6 Six Cylinder engine from the Ford (England) Zephyr Even that could be pepped up with a Raymond Mays manifold and carb set up.
afx Posted March 16, 2018 Author Posted March 16, 2018 (edited) I want to build a 2nd car and would like it to be Zephyr powered, any suggestions on what might be a could basis to create this engine? Edited March 16, 2018 by afx
dublin boy Posted March 16, 2018 Posted March 16, 2018 Amt have re-released the 280 ZX., At 2.8 litres' it's the smallest straight six I can think of. The triple SU carbs are in the racing version of the Tamiya Jag Mk 2, if you can one, but you know more than I do about resin bits and pieces.
Dann Tier Posted March 17, 2018 Posted March 17, 2018 Love this car!!!.....glad to see it again, JC!!, and that grille is awesome!!
afx Posted March 18, 2018 Author Posted March 18, 2018 (edited) Thanks Dann. I'll check out those parts Shay-thanks. When raced a radiator shroud was often installed to reduce lift caused by air entering the enormous grille opening. There were many different designs for the shroud and the stock grille may or may not be in place. Edited March 18, 2018 by afx
Rider Posted March 18, 2018 Posted March 18, 2018 (edited) Wow, this is really is coming along nicely. Really great work on the clean up and corrections. Edited March 18, 2018 by Rider
dublin boy Posted March 18, 2018 Posted March 18, 2018 (edited) I'd leave the grille in JC. I think I have a very old bitza of a 280 around somewhere if you want the engine. Edited March 18, 2018 by dublin boy

Shay, I looked at the kit instructions on-line and it appears it might work. I have this Fujimi kit maybe I can modify the L24 engine. Edited March 19, 2018 by afx
dublin boy Posted March 19, 2018 Posted March 19, 2018 well you' have the same engine there JC,. Best of luck.
afx Posted March 25, 2018 Author Posted March 25, 2018 (edited) Settled on the '61 Le Man class winner BEX1110 as the car I wish to build. Edited March 25, 2018 by afx
Dann Tier Posted March 25, 2018 Posted March 25, 2018 (edited) PERFECT, bud!!!, I have that engine too, if you ever need it, i'm not using it. Edited March 25, 2018 by Dann Tier
afx Posted March 26, 2018 Author Posted March 26, 2018 (edited) Appreciate the offer Dann. If I get into trouble I'll let you know. Edited March 26, 2018 by afx
afx Posted March 26, 2018 Author Posted March 26, 2018 (edited) For those that may care:AC Cars chassis number legend: AE – AC engine BE – Bristol engine RS – Ford engine (Rudd Speed) X – Export (left hand drive) CS – Carroll Shelby Therefore the car I am building BEX1110, would be Bristol powered, left hand drive, chassis number 1110. The inline Zephyr six block shares a lot of design characteristics with the little English Ford 4. The height and width of the block is very similar (as the bore and stroke were the same as the Consul/Zephyr 1508 4-cylinder early on), and the distributor location is similar too (though the carbs are on the opposite side of the head). Grafting two cylinders from a four cylinder English Ford pushrod 4 to the rear of another one ought to get you well into the ballpark visually. The stock L24 Z-car engine most likely has Hitachi knockoffs of SU carbs. Similar visually, but they have square shoulders on the vacuum chambers, as opposed to the rounded ones on the SU version. afx Posted March 26, 2018 Author Posted March 26, 2018 I haven't pulled out the Fujimi engine for comparison yet. If I take it on I want to use the side draft Webers.
Ace-Garageguy Posted March 26, 2018 Posted March 26, 2018 I went back and read all of the thread I'd missed. Beautiful work, and masterful attention to technical detail...as always. That cross-pushrod valve train arrangement is one of the odd ones. If I remember correctly, it's featured in this book...
