Eric Macleod Posted May 10, 2016 Posted May 10, 2016 Have any of you ever tried to repair one of these? I'm in need of some guidance.
Eric Macleod Posted May 10, 2016 Author Posted May 10, 2016 Here is the car. The owner wants it repaired to display worthy condition.
sjordan2 Posted May 10, 2016 Posted May 10, 2016 (edited) So the whole problem is with the wire wheels? The expensive answer, of course, is modelmotorcars.com. But contact Marvin Meit there for his opinion. He'll shoot you straight and is always ready to help, even if he doesn't sell you something. Edited May 10, 2016 by sjordan2
Harry P. Posted May 10, 2016 Posted May 10, 2016 The only way to repair the wheel is to take it completely apart and rebuild it. And hope that you have enough spokes to actually finish it. If you want to give it a shot, I can send you the instruction manual, which of course covers wheel assembly.
Eric Macleod Posted May 10, 2016 Author Posted May 10, 2016 I checked and no, I'm short a few spokes. I assume these can be made or bought? Thanks for the offer Harry. I'll PM you my address unless you are doing this electronically. Thanks guys.
Harry P. Posted May 10, 2016 Posted May 10, 2016 PM me your email. I can email you the manual. You might get lucky and find some extra spokes on Ebay.
Cato Posted May 11, 2016 Posted May 11, 2016 You'll need the kit jig, not just spokes Eric. Unless that wheel is just screwed together, you'll have to start from scratch. Contact Marvin, Dave Cox or Paul Koo for needed parts.
Eric Macleod Posted May 13, 2016 Author Posted May 13, 2016 Yes. I haven't started to even think about that.
Mike C Posted May 25, 2016 Posted May 25, 2016 I built one of those for somebody but I didn't have to repair it. But those wheels came with a built in fixture for holding the spokes in place. It was half built when I got it because two other model builders couldn't finish it and they never built a Pocher before. I have their Bugatti Type 50T that I built in '82 so that got me the job. So I finished it up and got paid $750 to do it too.
Eric Macleod Posted May 31, 2016 Author Posted May 31, 2016 I didn't get paid money for this job but do occasionally get to drive a Model J Duesenberg for my efforts. Not a bad deal.
Mike C Posted June 1, 2016 Posted June 1, 2016 I forgot about this site. Model Motorcars. They specialize in Pocher and make aftermarket goodies for Pocher kits. You can get repacement wheels/tires and other stuff from them. Just scroll down the page.http://modelmotorcars.com/new-parts-tools/You get to drive a model J Duesy! That is AWESOME!
Eric Macleod Posted June 2, 2016 Author Posted June 2, 2016 I think I have driven 9 Duesenbergs over the years with SJN 564 being the best. For obvious reasons Duesenbergs are my favorite Classic to drive but I have to tell you that a V12 powered Packard is quite a thrill too, as is a Franklin, particularly with 12 cylinder power. Lincoln K's and V16 Cadillacs are just trucks. Beautiful trucks, bur trucks all the same. A blower Bentley is pretty freaking amazing too. I have sampled just about everything out there and when tuned correctly a Full Classic is a thing of beauty on the road just as they are on a Museum floor. And of interest to readers here, while complicated, Rolls Phantoms are really great cars to drive.
Twokidsnosleep Posted June 3, 2016 Posted June 3, 2016 Cool stuff, Eric, really cool She appears to be in very capable hands for the repair Like the see a couple pics how she finishes off before you return her.
