67 Camaro 10.5 Tire Car

Decided to move this to the drag racing section since this will become one..

 

Since I can never finish one thing before moving on to another I broke out an old kit that I had done back in the late 90's for a redo.  Im still not 100% sure what route I will take with this car but I just wanted to do something different and to push myself while trying new modifications along with way.  So I guess I'll travel down this rabbit hole and see what obstacles will come and hopefully surprise myself in the process.  Unfortunately, I did not think about snapping any pics of the car before I did the tear down so my apologizes for that.  I grabbed this pic of the box off the net so you know which kit I am referencing.

 

I am leaning towards a modern day drag car and with all the great builds here from tyrone's 91 LX outlaw & 70 Nova, Red rocket 10's Super Gas SS Camaro and to Codi's Falcon as well as many others that I have looked at and admire and to get ideas from and hopefully make this into a car I will be proud of in the end..  So with that said I got the most of the car torn apart and the body sanded, primed and sanded again last night..  My hope is to get another coat of primer tonight along with another quick sand down and hopefully some color..  Any ideas on which color!!??!!  The hood is gonna need a little work.  It along with the front spoiler are from a 69 Motion kit that I've had in which the body was trashed previously before I acquired it.  As always tips, comments and/or suggestions are always welcome.  Thanks for looking and take care.

Oooook..  Soo not much from last night.  Just roughing in the turbo locations in place of the parking lights in the grill and removing the inner fenders.  Decided to go with a LS engine and twin turbos.  The grill broke on me while drilling out the holes so I had to call it a night while the glue setup.  Hopefully tonight Ill be able to get a little more done.  As always feel free to comment and/or make suggestions.  Thanks.

Messing around last night late and added the turbo cones and I started on the cage..  I swear I thought I measured this material and it equaled out to 1 5/8" tubing but it looks huge..  Ill have to look again and see at some point but regardless I am just playing around with what would look good.  Obviously nothing final at this point.  Also decided on a color for this thing Royal Plum which is a factory and one year only color..  Well at least the closest thing I can find to it.  I was digging through the fiance's nail polish and found one that is a dead ringer..  She thought I had lost my mind until I told her what it was for and how I planned to use it..  lol  This will be my first paint job with polish so wish me luck.  Im assuming from what Ive read to just thin it to 1:1.?.  Also since I dont have an airbrush yet but I do have a small HPLV gun that I will use that instead.  Ill goof around with the pressures before attempting it on the model itself.  Im guessing around 20-25psi?  Any one tried this scenario?  As always thoughts and/or comments are welcomed.  Thanks, Darrell

I used the HPLV gun last night with a couple different colors of polish..   Ignore the body as it was the only one I had laying around I could try on.  Keep in mind that there was no body work done to it aside from laying down a coat of primer first.  Gun setting was 25 psi and the first color I mixed at 1:1 with lacquer thinner and it made it extremely thin.  Also seems to have lightened the color up as well since it looked very close to the color I was wanting (Royal Plum) but after laying it down it was more of an Evening Orchard color..  2nd color was just reg black and I mixed this one more of 1 part polish 3/4 thinner..  I also lowered the pressure down to 20 psi and it went on better and had more coverage but with both polishes I could only get one side of the car in color.  So at this point it looks like it'll take at least 2 maybe 3 bottles to do a car.  As always comments and/or thoughts are welcomed.

Not that anyone cares but I filled in the subframe channels and started scratch building the cage with the correct dim round stick..

Looking good so far. I have found that when using nail varnish you have to experiment with thinning and pressure settings as no two varnishes are exactly the same. I found that the metallic varnishes tend to need more thinning than the primary colors. I have even had to go as high as 70/30 thinner to varnish to get the right consistency for airbrushing. Experimentation is the key to getting a good finish with nail polish. I also found that many light coats build up to the depth of color that you want. Good luck with the nail varnish.

Thanks for the response..  Yes I am beginning to think that polish is going to be more tricky than I had originally thought..  The crappy thing of it all is I only have one bottle of the color I want to use and according to the little lady; the company no longer makes that color..  I might try a lower pressure..  I also sprayed my first couple attempts outside so I may have been fighting wind..  Ill have to setup a paint booth inside the garage and see if that helps.  Thanks again for the tips!

Its been a few days and Ive had other obligations..  So tonight was the night to get some work done..  Unfortunately it decided to rain so I ended up added a section to the hood to fill the gap since it was used from the 69 Motion Camaro kit.  Hope to get it under primer tomorrow and then I can clean it up a little more.  As always comments and suggestions are encouraged.  Thanks, Darrell

Before you go much further, check to see if your glass will fit in the car. That roll cage looks awful close to the A pillars and I think that windshield is fairly thick in that area.

Thanks for the info.  I think the tub is slid forward as it fit before and Ill definitely check again.

Heres the initial fitting of the cage to the body.

Not much happened this weekend.  I have to say that building this cage is probably the hardest model building I have ever done..  Its definitely not the prettiest but for the first attempt Ill have to accept it.  Lastly let me know which stance you guys like the best.  Ignore the wheels as they are just place holders.  As always comments and suggestions are encouraged.  Thanks, Darrell

Thanks Ricky and Steve.  Not much this week with it being so hot out in the garage along with a few other priorities but I did get out this morning and add a few more bars to the cage which is almost finished..  I did break down and pop the cherry on cutting the doors..  Not sure this was the best idea but Ive done it and theres no turning back now..
