Hey everyone, can anyone tell me if I can make a stock woody with this kit?

Or would I have to use this one?

Sorry if this has already been discussed, but I could not find a thread!

I don't know about EVERY issue, but the "custom" issue of the '41 Woody I have (this one)   Image result for amt 41 woody   does NOT include the stock wheels, engine, etc.

I believe this to be true for all the custom issues as well.

Thanks, Bill! I thought that might be the case, but the R2 issue seems to be EVERYWHERE, while the ERTL version would take a little more searching, as well as a mail order.

The one in black was the only one that built stock IIRC.

Thanks, Rob! Not that the black one is that hard to find, but the red one is literally everywhere that they have model kits around here!

the red one is a recent reissue and the black one is from probably 15 years ago.

I have the red one, it can only be built as a street rod.

That's a shame. Round 2 should have turned this into a 2-in-1 kit. Stock and Street Rod versons since they have done the parts for both in the past.

My point exactly, I was hoping that someone would say that was the case.

Probably couldn't justify the ROI...plus they can run two different kits by keeping them separate.

I thought that it was mentioned a year or so ago, that the parts for both stock and custom would not all fit in the standard size box. That may not be true. I suspect that a stock only version might not sell in the quantities needed to make Round2 go to the effort. Again, I don't know, I'm just guessing.

The box argument makes sense..that kit is pretty stuffed in the box in either version IIRC.   The differences between the two versions were tires and wheels, maybe some engine and suspension parts also?

With this particular tooling the parts that are different are on different mold inserts, they have to run it one way then swap out the inserts and run it again and you end up with a lot of duplicated sprues. They were not intended to be run as 2-in-1's as AMT-Ertl's philosophy at the time was to make different boxings. They've done a few of the other 90's-era kits that were original set up this way as 2-in-1's (1960 Starliner, 1962 Pontiac...) so there must be some legitimate reason why they didn't do this one that way. Box size makes the most sense to me as the box is packed as it is.  Or it's possible the sales of other converted 2-in-1's wasn't enough to justify the added expense of making two runs.

One thing that's always bugged me about this kit - the lousy fit of the hood on the passenger side.  Did anybody get one with a hood that fits right?

A few years ago, one of the TAMIYA model magazines ran a built-up of a 41 Woody on the cover, showing the kit from the right front.  The gap between the hood and the fender line was very obvious.  I have a stock version half-built with the same gap.  IIRC, the left side fits OK. Which is weird.

If you want to do something different with the '41 Woody, take a tip from that TAMIYA magazine guy.  He built his as a Canadian (Right-Hand-Drive) Woody used by the British Army in WWII North Africa. Lots of weird and wonderful things were done to those Woodies.  Some had the roof cut off and a cloth convertible top fitted.  Some of those tops were folding, but others were permanently fixed in the up position.  And still others just had the roof sawed off, with no kind of convertible top.  Hardtops often had a rectangular observation hatch cut above the front seat. There are lots of photos on the Internet.
