Chuck Most Posted November 22, 2016 Posted November 22, 2016 Yesterday's dashboards were very simple with 12 or less buttons, knobs, levers, etc. Some of today's new vehicles have 40+ buttons, knobs, levers, etc. Modern technology is destroying our simple quality of life. Yeah, but those 40+ buttons are all hidden in various sub-menus on a touchscreen, so it's not that bad. (Being about 30% sarcastic here. )
Ace-Garageguy Posted November 22, 2016 Posted November 22, 2016 I'm also glad to see this thread GET BACK ON TRACK and hope it stays there (even though I made a needed off-track response). Regardless of your driving skills and attentiveness, mechanical failure can result in an accident. Ummm...almost never on the planet I live on...BUT the likelihood of "mechanical failure" increases with excessively complex onboard systems dependent on technology that's not 100% reliable. And NOTHING is 100% reliable. Think "unintended acceleration", non-crash oops deployment of airbags, hackers having already demonstrated the vulnerability of some Chrysler products to engine-shut-down on interstates, disabling ABS, etc. And don't even let me get started on the beyond-ridiculous idea of "steer by wire". In over 40 years in almost every facet of the car biz, I've NEVER seen a "mechanical failure" that wasn't the direct result of having chimps doing the service or repairs...and even then, it's almost unheard of. Consider this another "needed off-track response".
High octane Posted November 22, 2016 Posted November 22, 2016 Yeah, but those 40+ buttons are all hidden in various sub-menus on a touchscreen, so it's not that bad. (Being about 30% sarcastic here. ) I was talkin' 'bout 40+ exposed buttons, knobs, etc,, and I didn't get to the ones on the touchscreen as yet.
Chuck Most Posted November 22, 2016 Posted November 22, 2016 I was talkin' 'bout 40+ exposed buttons, knobs, etc,, and I didn't get to the ones on the touchscreen as yet. People were complaining about too many buttons... even though that was kind of a status symobol on '80's cars. Now... let's make them accessible via a touch screen! I know that kind of tech has come a long way since Oldsmobile's ill-fated VIC, but... I'd rather have an overabundance of visible switchgear.
D. Battista Posted November 23, 2016 Posted November 23, 2016 And here, I thought this was a thread about cool old dashboards. Goes to show what I know. This thread turned on the get go... Old dash boards and the cars they were in, are a work of art..!!!
Cpt Tuttle Posted November 23, 2016 Posted November 23, 2016 Facel Vega HK500.....just gorgeous. Mercedes 300SL.....as beautiful on the inside as it is on the outside! Volvo PV444, no doubt they had american cars as an inspiration.

Lovefordgalaxie Posted November 23, 2016 Posted November 23, 2016 Facel Vega HK500.....just gorgeous. Facel Vega, the whole car was great looking. A black HK-500 with a red leather interior... That's classy. If Facel hadn't tried their go with small cars they could be still making automobiles.
