Len Geisler Posted May 9, 2008 Posted May 9, 2008 I was reading Bob's latest article in the new SA about his build of the NISMO 350Z and I noticed that he mentioned using "Silly Putty" as a making medium. ANyone else use it? Is there anything special we need to know to use it? I can see the benefits.... Thanks Bob, or anyone who feels so inclined to answer me....
Kombi Posted May 9, 2008 Posted May 9, 2008 I've used it before, it works pretty well for masking irregular surfaces. I also use it for holding small parts when painting, it usually has just enough grip, but separates from the part easily when finished.
Zoom Zoom Posted May 9, 2008 Posted May 9, 2008 It works great; just smash it on, use a toothpick/whatever to push it off the surface you want to paint. I learned about it when I wanted to buy vinyl masks for a camo pattern for an airplane, they were out of the masks and the guy told me that the IPMS builders loved using Silly Putty to do the camo masking. And he was right!
crispy Posted May 9, 2008 Posted May 9, 2008 LOL, Yeah, Silly Putty was the answer for me too. I've got a few projects coming up with my son that will require camo paint and was told the easiest way was using silly putty. Skies the limit for patterns. Michael's Arts sells silly putty for $1.00, use a 40% coupon and pay $.60 cents. Great tip! Chris
Guest Gramps-xrds Posted May 9, 2008 Posted May 9, 2008 Well I certainly learned something today then. I would have never thought of silly putty.

george 53 Posted May 9, 2008 Posted May 9, 2008 Can you paint over it? how long does it stay pliable with paint on it? does the amount of paint on it keep it from sticking to the model? ou.ou.ou.I love new ideas!
Guest zebm1 Posted May 12, 2008 Posted May 12, 2008 Hmmm, last time I used silly putty was 20 yrs ago....seem to remember washing tha model, but I could be wrong.
