Chuck Most Posted December 19, 2016 Posted December 19, 2016 ^That's one of the reasons the X-El promos sold for such a high price (for the time). They were selling off a finite number of existing stock. I seem to remember either an editorial or an answer to a reader's letter in SAE years ago that gave a basic outline of what was going on.
Junkman Posted December 19, 2016 Posted December 19, 2016 Remember filling in that order form and sending it in....then a month or two later (surface mail) receiving the kits.It was ten months for me.
Junkman Posted December 19, 2016 Posted December 19, 2016 There were also X-EL '68 Imperial and Cadillac hardtops.
High octane Posted December 19, 2016 Posted December 19, 2016 I remember that ad, however I got out of the hobby in 1990 and stayed out 'til 1997-'98.
Casey Posted December 19, 2016 Posted December 19, 2016 The irony is that now these repops command more money than the original JoHan promos because these tend not to warp themselves inside out. No idea what you're talking about.
om617 Posted December 19, 2016 Posted December 19, 2016 Long before internet times. Sure would love to get a hold on some examples of the 58 Oldsmobile.
StevenGuthmiller Posted December 20, 2016 Author Posted December 20, 2016 You never throw anything away do you Casey? I do have to apologize to Mike (Lunajammer). Seems that he was correct about the timing on the X-EL start up. I see that one of Casey's catalogs has a June of 1976 date on it! Much earlier than I had thought. Steve
Casey Posted December 20, 2016 Posted December 20, 2016 I think these were either eBay listings or found combing the interwebz. I have very little JO-HAN literature in my possession so far.

Casey Posted December 20, 2016 Posted December 20, 2016 I love how Darlene used ALL CAPS, ALL THE TIME. She even made one sentence BOLD to let you know she meant business. Was there ever a clear distinction between JO-HAN and X-EL's products? Was JO-HAN strictly a producer of unassembled kits and X-EL for assembled promotional models? I recall seeing the taxi ('56 Plymouth, maybe?) and '55 Pontiac, both with green glass for $34 or so in 1993 at Model Empire (then still Hobbytown) and scoffing at the price. "Who would want green glass", I wondered...still do.
unclescott58 Posted December 24, 2016 Posted December 24, 2016 Found the X-El '59 Plymouth I've been looking for at a reasonable price on EBay. I thought it was Light Blue with a Dark Blue roof I was looking for. But after seeing the old flyers above, I realized that the car I needed was Light Blue with a Black roof. So that's what I went looking for on EBay. It matches my other '59 Chryslers better than the White and Aqua one I've had for years. Now to sell the White and Aqua one.R. Scott Aho
