rel14 Posted March 29, 2017 Posted March 29, 2017 Amt 1960 Ford ranchero,(amt822/12) what is with the Chevy motor in this kit.. What a let down, would never bought the thing if I knew that,, 170. 200. 260. 289..thats what was in them. Not a Chevy big block? Or am I wrong?
Rob Hall Posted March 29, 2017 Posted March 29, 2017 The kit was originally the '61 Ranchero, a curbside. At some point in the distant past, it was modified to have an open hood and for inexplicable reasons, a BBC. All subsequent issues as the '61 then the recent '60 have had that engine.
1930fordpickup Posted March 29, 2017 Posted March 29, 2017 Kit number T240 is the first to have the BBC under the hood from what I have found. 1977 from what I have found.
Mark Posted March 29, 2017 Posted March 29, 2017 The engine originated with the '66 Impala. AMT probably didn't want to tool an engine for the kit, so they went through existing tools and found one that fit. Other Modified Stocker kits probably would have been looked at back then, most likely the Ford kits first. The axle holes in the Ford engines would put them too far forward to fit the Ranchero. So they used a Chevy, which in 1:1 doesn't come close to fitting. My older brother put a 302 into a '62 sedan delivery around that time, and it wasn't a bolt-together deal. Ford made a lot of changes to put a V8 into the '63 Falcons.
