426 pack Posted May 7, 2017 Posted May 7, 2017 I am not a big fan of Porsches but I love V8s, 4 speeds and drag cars so I decided to make a muscle Porsche. It has a parts box engine, a 4 speed transaxle from vw bug and parts box drag tires, seats, roll bar and big shifter. It still needs a lot but I thought I would post some pics to see what people think so fell free to let me know what you think Questions and comments welcome
Ace-Garageguy Posted May 7, 2017 Posted May 7, 2017 (edited) Very interesting model, and your work looks clean. It's been done in reality for decades, and Renegade http://www.renegadehybrids.com/911/911.html still offers kits. Unfortunately, in the real world, putting an American V8 in the extreme rear of a 911 doesn't work so well from a handling perspective. An engine that's heavier than stock is really the last thing you want hanging out behind the gearbox, if going around corners has any appeal to you.Shoehorning one in the MIDDLE of a Porsche however, is an entirely different proposition. An LS-powered Cayman is a thing of wonder and joy. http://www.carbuildindex.com/29347/2007-porsche-cayman-s-with-ls3-engine-swap/ Kennedy also offers 1:1 kits and parts. http://www.kennedyenginc.com/pages/otheradaptions.aspxThe first American V8 engine swap into a 911 I ever saw used the entire drivetrain from an Olds Toronado, and the weight distribution wasn't as horrible as bolting a V8 to the back end. It's still far from ideal however, as the cast-iron Olds engine lives on top of the gearbox in that configuration, and raises the center of gravity something awful. The builder went so far as to make up a fake, hollow set of "fitted luggage" to camouflage the big engine where the jump seats used to be. Seems like this was in the late '60s or early 1970s. Snake45 Posted May 7, 2017 Posted May 7, 2017 Very cool! I have a mid-'60s Rod & Custom magazine that has a writeup on a SBC in a 911, very similar to yours. The owner loved it.
426 pack Posted May 7, 2017 Author Posted May 7, 2017 Thanks for the comment. I see where you are coming from and there is no reason for a V8 Porsche in the real world but I like doing V8 swaps in cars that were never ment to have V8 as I have a VW bug with a 60s rail car with a blown HEMI and I have a WIP Lamborghini countach with a blown 426 HEMI. I love drag cars,V8 and am not a fan of flat 6s and super cars so when I have a Porsche or Lamborghini I am going to do something crazy. It is only a $40 box of plastic that sits on a shelf and doesn't go any where so you mine as we'll make it look cool. I hope I don't sound like I disagree with you Ace I respect your opinion and agree with you 110% on the fact that V8 Porsches are not a good idea and are a waste of time in the real world.
426 pack Posted May 7, 2017 Author Posted May 7, 2017 Thanks for the comment Snake you an Ace are some of the best and I just want to say thanks as you don't know how much it means for you guys to comment on my post as I have wanted to build models like you guys ever sines I first seen this website a year or so ago (I never knew how to register until just a cupel of weeks ago but I have followed you build for a long time). You are very helpful and it is people like you guys that inspire me and give me the drive to do better and try harder on every build. Thanks
Ace-Garageguy Posted May 7, 2017 Posted May 7, 2017 (edited) ...I hope I don't sound like I disagree with you Ace I respect your opinion and agree with you 110% on the fact that V8 Porsches are not a good idea and are a waste of time in the real world. As I mentioned, there are SOME V8 conversions in Porsche products that make spectacular cars...much faster and more reliable than the original Porsche product. The Chevrolet LS-powered Porsche Cayman (the Cayman is basically a hardtop Boxster) swap makes a very competent car into a great car, is only a few pounds heavier than stock, and costs less to do than rebuilding the Porsche engine. Hot-rodding at its best. There's at least one running around with a Ford Coyote engine in it too. If just for grins you were to say your V8 / 911 swap above is an aluminum-block-and-heads engine... WELCOME to the board too, sir. Always glad to see somebody who likes to build different. Different is good. Edited May 7, 2017 by Ace-Garageguy
Lordmodelbuilder Posted May 7, 2017 Posted May 7, 2017 Always liked the aftermarket V8 powered Porsche cars. I remember Rod Simpson's V8 912 & his 914.Here's a link to some cool pics. http://www.engineswapdepot.com/?p=1881
426 pack Posted May 7, 2017 Author Posted May 7, 2017 Yeh sorry about that I forgot all about that part of your writeup another good Porsche V8 swap is the Porsche 914 it is mid engine and revell makes a kit of it that I plan on doing a V8 swap. As for the aluminum block and heads I have some silver paint that looks like aluminum so it can have a aluminum block and heads personally I would have never thought of that so thanks for pointing it out.
oldcarfan Posted August 2, 2018 Posted August 2, 2018 I just came across this thread and love it! I remember seeing one of these and also a Corvair with a mid-engine conversion when I was little. A couple years ago I read a blog by a guy who had done one of these conversions in real life. It turned out that an LS GM engine weighed not too much more than a Porsche flat six and because it was shorter it actually helped the front/rear balance by a couple of percent as well as adding some 150 horsepower. Now I'm thinking that one of my Porsche models might do well with one of these.
