Brenan Posted October 14, 2017 Posted October 14, 2017 Hello, my name is Brenan and I have some questions. Recently I started thinking about making a diorama. The first thing that popped into my mind was a junkyard diorama. I have started the diorama and have some plans for it, and I want to make a service truck for the junkyard. I took this old pickup I had finished a while ago and thought it was a good candidate. I tried to use sophisticated finishes iron metallic surfaces and instant rusting solution on the model. I do not think it came out that well and was wondering if there is a easier way to do this with this paint and if anyone has any tips on my attempt on this.
Ace-Garageguy Posted October 14, 2017 Posted October 14, 2017 Here's a start, and it addresses your problem.
Brenan Posted October 14, 2017 Author Posted October 14, 2017 Thank you Ace-Garageguy, I’m sure those will be useful.
Brenan Posted October 14, 2017 Author Posted October 14, 2017 Also if anyone has any ideas or tips for making a car look like it was sitting for a while like of dust was on it. I have looked on YouTube and found people using pastels, does anyone agree with this idea?
Foxer Posted October 14, 2017 Posted October 14, 2017 One of the biggest things about Sophisticated Finishes is to be sure you but it in a plastic bag after applying the rusting liquid. This increases the effect greatly.
Ace-Garageguy Posted October 14, 2017 Posted October 14, 2017 (edited) Also if anyone has any ideas or tips for making a car look like it was sitting for a while like of dust was on it. I have looked on YouTube and found people using pastels, does anyone agree with this idea? Train modelers have been using pastels and chalks for well over 50 years to excellent effect. If you want to see how it's done right, just watch some videos. Here's one. ( Keep in mind you don't HAVE to buy the pre-packaged products. You can experiment and develop your own techniques easily too) Edited October 14, 2017 by Ace-Garageguy
Brenan Posted October 14, 2017 Author Posted October 14, 2017 Here are some pictures of the ford pickup, this is my attemp of rusting it after more that 12 hours sealed in the plastic bag.
Brenan Posted October 14, 2017 Author Posted October 14, 2017 Was wondering does anyone have any preferences for sealing a rusting model, I am using a zip lock bag, but would suran wrap be better?
JollySipper Posted October 15, 2017 Posted October 15, 2017 Hey, Brenan..... Looking at pics of your truck, I think this is what I might would try. Dry sand the whole body with something like 2000 grit paper, making sure to not sand hard enough to get down to bare plastic. Then while the whole body is covered with dust, spray a coat of dull coat over everything. that should seal the rust, and the sanding will blend everything nicely......
Tom Geiger Posted October 16, 2017 Posted October 16, 2017 Hi Brenan, Welcome to the board. I see you are on Long Island. There is a model car show there on November 11th. Going to a show will allow you to see everyone's work in person, buy some kits and supplies and best of all, talk with modelers. Many of us from the board will be there! The theme is Rat Rods so there will be a lot of weathered models on display, with owners who would be happy to explain to you how they did their weathering and rust! Here's the show info:https://www.liarsmodelcarbuilders.com/events
Brenan Posted October 16, 2017 Author Posted October 16, 2017 Thank you JollySipper, I will defidentally try that and show you how it came out, and Tom Geiger I will defidentally try to get to that show on November 11th.
