Jantrix Posted December 12, 2017 Posted December 12, 2017 Yep. Building this one. Doing it OOB for a club challenge. But that's no reason not to make it look authentic. BUT, apparently photos of the featured car are as rare as hen's teeth. Even on John Greenwood's website. Lots of photos of the #49 and #50 car, but not much on the #48 with these graphics. I mostly concerned with the appearance of the wheels (chrome or aluminum), the side pipes (chrome or silver) and a few other small details. This seems to be the only car of JG (of this time frame) to have five spoke wheels. The rest have Minilites. If anyone has any reference on this car, please let me know.
Ace-Garageguy Posted December 12, 2017 Posted December 12, 2017 (edited) This photo of the #48 car, taken at the '71 Sebring race, shows black sidepipes, Minilites, and brake cooling extractor fans fitted to the front wheels. Edited December 12, 2017 by Ace-Garageguy
Snake45 Posted December 12, 2017 Posted December 12, 2017 I have several books with quite a few pics of RR Vettes in them, so I'll take a look for this car tonight. But I can tell you without even looking, the predominant side pipe color in this era was black. The American wheels wouldn't have been chrome, the spokes would have been flat steel gray or black.

Okay, went through the books. Only one pic of the #48 car, and it has a way cut down windshield. Can't tell what the rear wheels are but the fronts are the weird disks seen on Ace's pic above. Black side pipes. Speaking of side pipes, I was surprised to see that many of them (on other Corvettes of the general era) were flat white or a flat silver color. But the predominate color was black.
Jantrix Posted December 13, 2017 Author Posted December 13, 2017 Thanks guys. As I said, hens teeth. I'll go ahead and check out five spokes of the period and paint the side pipes black. Much appreciated.

If you're doing the car AS IT RACED AT SEBRING, it had Minilites (the photo above was taken AT SEBRING). (OOPS...now I see you're doing an OOB build. Never mind.) Alloy wheels on real racing cars WOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN CHROME, and very unlikely the centers would have been polished. Race car wheels are periodically inspected for cracks, and chrome could hide damage. The centers would have been pebbly as-cast gray magnesium or aluminum, and the rims would have been machined, possibly polished.
afx Posted December 13, 2017 Posted December 13, 2017 Photo shows finish for the American Mags. Note white side pipe.

426 pack Posted December 13, 2017 Posted December 13, 2017 Don't know of this will help. It's a photo from 1972
Jantrix Posted December 13, 2017 Author Posted December 13, 2017 Cale, thanks. I'm looking specifically for the livery on the model box.
