modelercarl Posted February 22, 2018 Posted February 22, 2018 Saw this stainless steel Cadillac this afternoon while out shopping. I see it pretty regularly around town but never parked where I had a chance to get pictures. Waited about 15 minutes for the driver to return so I could ask questions (bet he/she is tired of that!) but gave up as I had some frozen frozen items and had to get them home. We are only about 15 miles from the GM Proving Grounds in Milford, MI. so I suspect this belongs to someone connected to GM. Sometimes in the summer sun when this goes by it is blinding and hurts your eyes to look at it......
Rob Hall Posted February 22, 2018 Posted February 22, 2018 (edited) I assume that is some sort of chrome wrap on there? Stainless steel would be like the '79-ish Eldorado Biarittz roofs or a DeLorean... Edited February 22, 2018 by Rob Hall
modelercarl Posted February 22, 2018 Author Posted February 22, 2018 I think you might be right Rob. I showed the pictures to a son-in-law who works at the proving grounds and he said it is chrome wrap, that they use it sometimes for cars in presentations to the brass and some shows. They even have different colors/shades of the stuff, very time consuming to apply. He is surprised that this car is privately licensed, thinks maybe the owner did it on his own as GM does not let these cars out for private ownership.
Rob Hall Posted February 22, 2018 Posted February 22, 2018 (edited) Considering the bumpers are plastic, I'd say it's definitely a chrome wrap...like this older Escalade..chrome wrap also. Edited February 22, 2018 by Rob Hall
misterNNL Posted February 23, 2018 Posted February 23, 2018 I have personally seen a Honda Accord coupe in this area twice in the last week.Instead of" Honda" on the trunk lid it has the word"Chrome".Really gets your attention for sure.We have several Honda factories in this part of Ohio building both cars and motorcycles.
espo Posted February 23, 2018 Posted February 23, 2018 With the license plates looking like a personalized plate I would think it's privately owned. I know there is some very expensive paints that will look like chrome but the new "wraps" are much more cost effective and they hold up to the elements better. A local "Tint" shop has one of their trucks done like this but in a bright Blue. You just can't miss it on the road.
Gregg Posted February 23, 2018 Posted February 23, 2018 I do have an article/series coming up on the chrome paint, picked up the whole system a while ago. One of these days I'll be able to start it. It's a long, hard, and dare to say, physically demanding way to do chroming.
