NOBLNG Posted May 7, 2018 Posted May 7, 2018 I have question about the details /decals on this kit. There are decals for most of the emblems that are cast into the body. 1) If I am going to use the decals, do I sand off the mouldings and apply the decals to a flat surface, or will a solution like micro sol allow the decals to conform over the cast in mouldings? 2) There is no decal for the "Chevrolet" on the trunk. It is a very fine detail. Would I be better off to try to paint it after the body is painted (assuming my main paint job does not obliterate the detail) OR... apply foil to the detail, trim it as close as possible and clean it off after every coat of paint? Thanks in advance, I have not dealt with this fine of detail until now.
StevenGuthmiller Posted May 7, 2018 Posted May 7, 2018 Those scripts are not that bad at all. I've done much worse with the "foil under paint technique". Depending on the paint you are using, you can get away with a lot more coats of paint over them than you may think. I use automotive primers and paints and can get away with applying the foil right before the final coat or 2 of color with very good results even on scripts so fine that I questioned whether or not it was possible. You would have a very hard time finding a script finer than the old AMT '59 Bonneville annual kit, yet after about 5 coats of primer & at least 2 or 3 coats of color, I still managed to produce nice scripts on the rear quarters & trunk lid of this example. The entire body was then covered with about 4 or 5 coats of clear. Steve
NOBLNG Posted May 8, 2018 Author Posted May 8, 2018 (edited) Thank You Steven. You are one of the many Folks on this forum whose opinions I value greatly! So, you are saying the "Bonneville " script on the trunk and tailfins was foiled just before the final coat or two of paint? What about the use of the kit decals? Over the script or sand it off? All advice appreciated! Edited May 8, 2018 by NOBLNG spellin'

All advice appreciated! Yes, I do all of my scripts in this fashion. You should absolutely remove the scripts if you plan on using the decals. I would just sand the large badges smooth such as the one below the trim on the trunk lid and then apply the decal to the top. Steve Edited May 8, 2018 by StevenGuthmiller
NOBLNG Posted May 8, 2018 Author Posted May 8, 2018 OK, I get it... if I can sand the detail off, yet keep the raised "base' of the detail to apply the decal to... then great! It will have the detail of the decal and the raised presence of script. Thanks!
Snake45 Posted May 8, 2018 Posted May 8, 2018 I just did my first "foil under paint" job on a Revell '68 Corvette. Rear panel lettering, SS427 badges on the hood, and the front and rear crossed-flag emblems (not unlike the emblems on yours). I did this with kitchen foil over bare plastic, and the flag emblems, I covered the flags with a drop of Elmer's Glue to mask them before I started painting. I then laid on one coat of Walmart black primer, three coats of Testor Firey Orange lacquer, and about four coats of Model Master Clear Top Coat enamel. During the rub-out/polish, all the chrome got exposed exactly as planned. I'm pretty pleased with the results (photos soon). I did have to pry the Elmer's masks off the flags with the tip of an Xacto, but they did pop right off leaving the flags perfect. I'll be using this technique again.
