iamsuperdan Posted August 25, 2018 Posted August 25, 2018 Hi everyone, As a non-plane builder, I need recommendations from the experts. My dad just found this kit at an antique store. $10 CDN and was still factory sealed. As one might guess, the decals will be unusable. What are some good sources for replacements declas for airplane kits? Does anyone know if this kit has been repopped, or if there are specific decals already made for this? THanks.
Jim B Posted August 25, 2018 Posted August 25, 2018 You could try Vintage Flyer Decals: http://vintageflyerdecals.com/index.html but I'm not sure they'll have what you need. There is also V1 Decals: https://www.v1decals.com/ who might be able to help. Good luck.
Can-Con Posted August 25, 2018 Posted August 25, 2018 I also could use a set for the same kit. Unfortunately no luck on either site Jim posted. I've been looking for a couple months now and haven't found any on the net.
Mike999 Posted August 26, 2018 Posted August 26, 2018 Here's a link to a Britmodeller forum where they talk about replacement decals for your Clipper. One poster wrote: "Fortunately, Airfix reissues this kit from time to time so it shouldn't be that tough to get another set from them." https://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/235028527-airfix-boeing-314-clipper-1144/ You might also try to get a set of Minicraft Clipper decals. The Minicraft is exactly the same kit; some issues of it still have "Airfix" stamped inside. Its decal sheet includes the big Day-Glo Orange panels for the top of the wing. The kit doesn't seem to be in their line right now, but they have a parts replacement service. They will charge a few bucks for processing/shipping if you can't provide the UPC code from the original box. The Minicraft kit number is #14503, Pan Am B-314 Clipper. https://minicraftmodels.com/pages/replacement-parts
Snake45 Posted August 26, 2018 Posted August 26, 2018 Your decals might well be usable. Put them in a window with sun exposure for a few days to bleach out the yellowing, then coat them with Micro Superfilm. Then cut them out and use them normally. I'd lay a modest even money bet that they'll work fine. I wouldn't hesitate to try using Airfix decals of '60s vintage after doing this (though I might have a backup plan in mind if it didn't work).
