Oldmopars Posted December 28, 2018 Posted December 28, 2018 Well, it is a MAN truck. I got this on a great sale and figured I could make it something cool. The kit is a 6x4 and has a high roof and sleeper. To me the roof looks funny and the sleeper without the top is not right. So, I started with the roof, I took it off, shortened the cab and made a new roof. I was a bit frustrated by the total lack of pictures of the roof from the top. Seems all the pictures people take are from ground level and the roof can't bee seen, so I have had to guess as to what the roof might look like, but I think it is close. I have a little more to do on the cab, but it is close. I had to cut down the roof inside and make it into a headliner as apposed to a high roof. I also cut down the interior floor. Plan is to make it a flat bed, unless I find something that turns me on more. So, here is where it is at right now.
Oldmopars Posted December 28, 2018 Author Posted December 28, 2018 Yes, I am building a Day Cab version of this truck. I am not a big fan of the goofy high roof these have. Too much of an after thought.
chuckyr Posted December 28, 2018 Posted December 28, 2018 A Volvo "High Roof" day cab is referred to as the Eurotrotter cab. A day cab with sleeper above the cab. A Volvo "High Roof" full sleeper cab is referred to as the Globetrotter cab. I don't know what MAN trucks calls them. In Europe and many other countries, total rig lengths are strictly regulated. Having the shortest prime mover length leaves more space for trailer length payload. Also the maneuverability of the set back front axle configuration is the de facto set up in most other regions outside of North America.

I discovered that it used to be that way in the USA also, till the late 70's when the regulations were changed. That is why the COE trucks were so popular in the 60's-70's, and now there are very few being made. It had to do with overall length and a short COE truck could haul a longer trailer and more cargo, more cargo per load meant more money per load.

Oldmopars Posted January 25, 2019 Author Posted January 25, 2019 (edited) This is just more evidence of my ADHD. I have had this one on and off the bench for a couple of months now. I got a little more done, but been slow on the updates. I got some paint on the interior and the cab. Lots more to do on the cab. Engine is detailed for the most part, may still do some light weathering. Still need to weather the interior and make it look like it is slightly used, not factory fresh. The straps on the fuel tank and the clamps on the intake hose are both aluminum tape, as are the air tank straps. The yellow and orange tint on the lights is done with colored Sharpie. It turns out good, tinted and still clear. I went for the Grey plastic look for the bumper and fender guards on the cab to give it the fleet truck look. I want it to look like it is a working truck for a construction outfit. Maybe next month I will finish it. Edited January 25, 2019 by Oldmopars
tbill Posted January 25, 2019 Posted January 25, 2019 It’s looking good, I like your changes to the cab, I find it way more visually appealing, you’ve made it look ‘normal’.
stitchdup Posted January 25, 2019 Posted January 25, 2019 neat work. I like your cab modifications, they look like the ones that the farmers use for cattle floats around where i live
