randx0 Posted August 22, 2008 Posted August 22, 2008 My son Nathan and I built this dio in about a day . We started with a piece of cardboard I primed with some brown primer .using scene a rama foliage and grasses (purchased at michaels for about ten bucks) following the directions included laid down the grass and foliage .next we found some small rocks and twigs and glued them down .I did the gravel road with some additional ballast from the railroad department of the lhs. this was a fun project for both of us and I think it turned out ok. Nathan has a knack for being a little rough on things but this has held up for a month to date.the difficulty level wasn't hard ,the hardest part fo Nathan was waiting for the glue to dry but he made it. and he did apply all the grass and rocks and selected the model all I did was the additional sealing coats of glue and the road and the basic planning/layout.all in all a good first time dio for both of us and at a pretty reasonable price.

It is fun sharing the hobby with the family. And yeah dad I hope Mick gets into building models too. We all know he sure is into taking them apart Have fun everyone !!! -Will

Later, we went to a car show today and Nathan saw a nice 34 ford he liked so I suppose that's what it will be.perhaps the finished 34 will make a cameo on the old diorama Edited August 24, 2008 by randx0

randx0 Posted January 3, 2010 Author Posted January 3, 2010 Nathan was happy to get more feedback on this one.We build stuff together we recently tried out spray painting he did pretty good and was able to work the can by himself . yes he wore a respirator(he thinks it's like darth vader or a clone trooper)and understands that he needs to always use the respirator when spraying.we do use acrylic paint markers when we can and he uses a glue pen most of the time .Nathan is currently building an acura rsx and the wave rider.projects he designs and I implement a 4x4 general lee, custom corvette.on our collaborations i take care of the finer details and he calls the shots and works on the fundamentals ,this exercise allows him to see the idea come to fruition and we get to work together and honestly the ideas and stuff he comes up with ends up looking really neat and is always stuff I wouldn't think of .I highly recommend giving your kids carte blanche to your stash have him/her pick the kit ,pieces ,modifications and show them how you do it have them build major sub assemblies while you take care of the details a youngster just doesn't have the dexterity to pull off .also after hearing the new posts he is going to tackle the 34 ford it will be one he sprays himself probably the revell snap kit. thank you all for the encouraging words they go a long way in motivating both of us .
