I bought Testors enamel silver aluminium and flat steel. I painted both on a white plastic spoon with no primer under them. The silver aluminium is dull and the flat steel has a shine. Ideas on this ?

Interesting. I have both and they're both kinda semi-gloss and not that far apart in color. I'd LOVE to find a good flat aluminum.

I agree with color difference. The flat looks a little darker but why isn't it flat ? Do both need a gray or black primer ?

I forgot to mention, this is from the bottle.

Krylon dull auminum. Sprays nice, covers well, especially decanted and airbrushed.

I wish I could find it. Nowhere near me has it, and I don't think they even list it online anymore.

Tamiya makes XF-16 Flat Aluminum, in the bottle. It dries dead flat but needs thinning, it's pretty thick.  Tamiya also makes Aluminum TS-17 in a spray can, which I've never tried.

One aircraft modeler said he had good luck airbrushing with the Games Workshop line of acrylic metallic paints.

If I want a larger part painted silver-ish, like a weathered fender or door, I use one of the cheap Chrome-Silver Krylon sprays from Wal-Mart or Hobby Lobby.  Then overspray that with a Flat Clear to dull it down.  Then use the salt or rubber-cement treatment or whatever, and overspray that with the body or rust colors.

My local O'Reilly's auto parts has it for $5.99 a can!

YUP !  That's the stuff !!   I LOVE it.   It's the ONLY thing I use for parts that need to look like aluminum.  Spray it right on bare plastic - no primer needed.  Perfect finish every time.

Tamiya TS-17 Is a fantastic flat silver color that looks great as dull (not flat) aluminum or silver. Pretty much no discernible grain to it. Love it.

I've also been really impressed with the results from the Vallejo acrylic paints (brush on) that my local Hobby Lobby is now stocking in the plastic models section of the store.

Very nice finish and realistic color for engine blocks (i.e. steel, cast iron, etc.) and other metallic parts.
