Gramps46 Posted January 31, 2019 Posted January 31, 2019 (edited) It has been a good week to keep the mailman in business. I received a Franklin Mint Corvette Mako Shark and a WIX Ford GT40MKII, both at what I considered a reasonable price, less than current kit prices. The Mako Shark is pretty spectacular and I could find no faults. The version they modeled is the one updated with mag wheels and an ZL-I engine. The WIX Ford GT40MKII is the only diecast in 1/24 that I know of and is modeled on the Holman and Moody continuation car, thus the non original markings. My plan is to change the markings to the 1966 yellow Ford #8 at Le Mans and tone done the wheels and move the rearview mirror from inside to outside the drivers side window. I am not going to bother with the Gurney hump on the drivers door. Edited January 31, 2019 by Gramps46 Add photo
Snake45 Posted January 31, 2019 Posted January 31, 2019 Very very cool! I remember seeing the Mako Shark at a beach shop that sold high-end collectibles about 20 years ago, only time I've ever seen one in the flesh. I have the AMT snapper kit to build, that's as close as I'll ever get to it. Congrats on a great addition to your collection!

randyc Posted January 31, 2019 Posted January 31, 2019 Cool Mako. The one I saw didn't have the bubble top. Nice! And I think the GT40 was released like that in honor of 40th anniversary of the LM win? Or 40th anniv. of the car? Thos are nice, I gotta say. I could never build one for what these cost usually.

Yes, and with the body lower sides pre-airbrushed in silver. I'm gonna take that off and re-do it in white, after polishing the nice dark blue metallic plastic out.
Gramps46 Posted January 31, 2019 Author Posted January 31, 2019 This picture shows a brief comparison of the Franklin Mint and AMT promo Mako Sharks. At first I thought the FM Mako was too big but I checked the wheel bases including the C10 and they were all correct for their scale. I am assuming the AMT Snapper and the promo are the same since Snake said the paint scheme matches. One thing I thought odd is the exhaust tips are tiny on both models.

I have used Snake's patented method of using non-acetone finger nail polish remover to take off the nefarious tampo markings and like this a lot better. Will now add the correct markings for the 1966 Le Mans. Just learned IndyCals makes the correct decals to convert to the #8 yellow Le Mans entry. Edited February 2, 2019 by Gramps46 correct text
Gramps46 Posted January 31, 2019 Author Posted January 31, 2019 This is what I am going for with the WIX GT40 MKII. Oops....I was wrong, it does have the Gurney style door hump.

It looks bigger because it IS bigger. Although it previewed C2/Sting Ray styling, the Mako Shark was built on a C1 chassis, which had a longer wheelbase.

I was comparing it to the 1/24 C10, not the 1/25 AMT Mako, and it does check out correctly. The story goes the Mako Shark was built upon the C1 chassis of XP-700. And interesting the custom parts in the SMP 61 Corvette kit kind of mimic the XP700. (I said kind of)

I learned the trick right here in the diecast ghetto from Madhorseman. Credit where due, and all that.
randyc Posted February 1, 2019 Posted February 1, 2019 Yep, I'm not sure where, but I learned it somewhere too. removing tampos, that is. And oh that GT40 is gonna look good.
