In a continuing effort to bring variety into the FTB engine shop, I purchased two Merlins on eBay. One is a resin casting of the Airfix Mosquito, the other was the engine sprue of a Trumpeter Spitfire.

The resin engine was missing its supercharger so I copied the other one and installed it. It is the wrong one for a Mosquito but it is what I had.

The plan was to do one as a display unit like this one:

and the other one as a foundling like this one, maybe not so rough but badly weathered anyway:

Now I have a big dilemma. The resin unit is riddled with pinholes and would lend itself well to a deteriorated status, but it is more detailed than the Trumpeter unit.

Another question, am I correct in assuming that the conduit shown by the arrows house spark plug wires or are they fuel lines?

That's the worst resin that I've seen, ever.

I think that is why it was painted flat black. And that's why I think it is the best one for the heavily weathered effect.

I have the resin one pretty well where I want it. I''l do the other one next. We'll see which one become the right candidate for the wrecked version.

They are spark plug leads as the Merlin has two ignition systems, the Merlin also has a carburetor...so fuel lines they are not.

Airfix has a nice crisp Merlin in the 1:24th scale P51D Mustang kits, it's the Packard version of the Rolls Royce Merlin 66.

Nice work Pat - shame about the resin piece.

I love this engine!  Living in southern Ontario, I get the privilege of seeing and hearing the Merlins in action on the Lancaster from Hamilton from time to time.  What a sound!

Could not imagine what it would have been like to be on the ground looking up at this beast and several dozen of its friends overhead.

Keep up the great work
