Grease 50 Mercury Custom Convertible

Heres my latest project that im working on i built this particular kit i would say in 2007 as the Cobra 50 Merc just never got to finish it. So i was doing some brainstorming about building Craterfaces 49 Merc from the movie Grease. First thing i did was carefully removed the chopped roof and added a Revell 48 Ford windshield frame which was widened. I filled in the taillight housings with superglue and baking soda to make way for a set of taillights from the AMT 53 Ford Pickup which are the optional units that are 49-51 Mercury taillights. More progress to come stay tuned.

Please don't take this the wrong way since I'm criticizing post WW2 Ford here and not your work, but.......

Wow, that stock drop top Merc windshield frame looks all sorts of off compared to even an unchopped coupe and just kinda wonky at best with the rest of the movie car's lines! Explains the chopped and raked top Rob Ida and crew did on an otherwise stock appearing in '17 or '18.

The actual movie car started life as a hardtop the builder Eddie Paul chopped the roof off and made it into a convertible did the same thing to the Grease Lightning car. Although my build the windshield frame does look a little tall compared to the one in the pics. Im just using what i have i could have gone the easier route and bought a AMT 49 Merc kit.

Interesting, but the Grease Mercury was a 1950, not a 1949...not much difference but there are differences, among them the front turn signal/parking lights and dash.
A friend of mine needed some parts for a 1950 Mercury as he had just bought one, so we went to Papke Enterprises as he was the man to go to in SoCal when it came to Mercury 49-51, Bill had everything you could ask for when it came to these Mercs.
This is supposed to be the movie car under restoration according to Bill and I took the pictures at his shop in late November 2012, unfortunately Bill Papke himself passed away about a month after we were there...lots of knowledge lost there.
