As I'm sure many of you have noticed I'm a vw fan. I have the 76 and 83 euro golfs already but the california wheels version has caught my interest. On the box it shows the USA bumpers and side marker lights but are those parts actually in the kit? Also does it have the much larger rear lights that the USA versions have?  I like the idea of having a USA version in the collection and since there isn't a westmoreland version this may be my best option

Here is a review and pics from IPMS. It has the bumpers but I can't tell about lights.

thankyou sir, guess i need to add one of these to the stash. I think the rear lights might be wrong but i only know the us version from 1981 onwards so the earlier ones might have had the euro lights. thanks again

There is an earlier AMT US version Rabbit.  It is a 1/25 scale kit. This one was for sale on eBay for $80,  I believe the tooling still exists and not sure if Round 2 is planning on reissuing it anytime soon.  VW actually built Rabbits in the USA for a while.

I'm sure amt will rerelease it, and I'll get one or 6, lol. They did the scirocco recently and its a pretty nice kit for its age. Needs a little work to correct the engine bay and engine mount though. I should really finish mine. I would like to see a jetta transkit for the mk1 and 2 kits too. I'm sure if someone did a grille for the westmoreland mk1 it would sell too cos I'm not the only fan of these kits.

The rear lamps are correct for an earlier Rabbit, after the facelift the rear lamps got larger, and the front headlamps changed from round to square, when i worked for VW from 1987-93 we had a nice MK1 Rabbit in the compound, the interior was totally different to a European version.

Thankyou sir, thats some good info, I assumed the interiors would be the same. I might see if a can find a grille from something else to do the square lights, and i think i may be able to alter some big rig rear lights for it.

The Earlier Rabbits were imported from Germany, and apart from the bumpers and side marked lamps, they were the same as a European model, I forget the year when they started to be built in the U.S, which it i remember correctly was an old Chrysler factory, the interior was changed using softer materials and the suspension was softened up to suit the American market.

This past summer I saw a tattered one of these on a trailer being towed by a pickup truck.  No doubt on it's way to being restored!   That's when I realized I hadn't seen one in a while.
