Eric Macleod Posted January 27, 2020 Author Posted January 27, 2020 So just like the proverbial band aid, the old exhaust system is ripped off. L-29 exhaust system version 2 will begin tonight.
Eric Macleod Posted January 28, 2020 Author Posted January 28, 2020 The revised exhaust system is going back on. I like this one better as it is cleaner than what I had before.
Eric Macleod Posted January 29, 2020 Author Posted January 29, 2020 I decided tonight to move to something else. I disassembled one of the Automodello Cord wheels and applied red paint to the spokes, hub and rim. I also painted the brake drum dark blue. Man what a difference. While the wheels are quite nice in chrome the red against the blue makes them absolutely pop. What do you think?
Eric Macleod Posted January 29, 2020 Author Posted January 29, 2020 And the undercarriage is in its first coat of primer. It feels like huge progress has been made today.
Nells250 Posted January 29, 2020 Posted January 29, 2020 Thought of this thread once again: https://larzanderson.org/museumevents/communityhistory/ (Jan 30th event) ?
Richard Bartrop Posted January 30, 2020 Posted January 30, 2020 Oh yes, red was definitely the right choice for the wheels.

David G. Posted January 31, 2020 Posted January 31, 2020 Wow! What a battle you've had with this build. I think that red is a great choice for the wheels. Soldier on! David G.
Eric Macleod Posted February 4, 2020 Author Posted February 4, 2020 Today I spent time refining the fit of the convertible top. Here it is getting closer to being ready for prime time.
Eric Macleod Posted February 7, 2020 Author Posted February 7, 2020 We have arrived upon another milestone; the wheels are done. Im waiting for a new dashboard from Shapeways (thanks Pico) then will complete the final details of the body. Next up, an interior.
Pico Posted February 7, 2020 Posted February 7, 2020 The wheels look great. You will like the dashboard.
David G. Posted February 8, 2020 Posted February 8, 2020 The wheels look sharp! I always consider "wheels on the ground" the unofficial half way point of the build. David G.

If this is the halfway point, and it has been on the bench for 37 years, I won't live long enough to finish it. Nope...done by the end of March.

Today I added the rod for the hood hinge and the cowl band. The latter looked too heavy to me but I had nothing smaller. Fortunately Plastruct has a small half round styrene available in .30 which should look the part. That slows the body progress thus I am moving to other parts next.. like how do I get the wheels to stay on? Edited February 10, 2020 by Eric Macleod Forgot photos
Eric Macleod Posted February 11, 2020 Author Posted February 11, 2020 I am still working on the front wheel problem. I'm going to have to sleep on it a bit. In the meantime I received the fabulous Pico Elgin 3d printed instrument panel from Shapeways. I put a light coat of primer on it. I think it will be an aesthetic delight.
Eric Macleod Posted February 12, 2020 Author Posted February 12, 2020 So today was a major milestone. I have started adding color to the car. Honestly, I wondered if I would ever get there. As you can see, this is a decidedly unorthodox way to assemble the model but was necessary because of the way the body and chassis needed to be assembled. More to come soon.
Eric Macleod Posted February 14, 2020 Author Posted February 14, 2020 Other than engineering a way to connect the front wheels and installing the rear axle, the chassis is pretty much done. I figure while this is a long way from factory correct, it has some visual interest. Besides, when you figure I started out thinking about nothing but a flar plate, something is better than nothing. Here is what I came up with.
David G. Posted February 16, 2020 Posted February 16, 2020 I have to say that I'm impressed with your dedication to this project as well as the results of your effort. Keep up the good work Eric. David G.

Keep up the good work Eric. David G. It has indeed fought me every step of the way but seems a little more cooperative of late. I suspect every model project has a few "I'll get to it later" items. I have hit a point where one of them is now unavoidable. The top of the cowl has had a jagged, line I created with some inept dremel work. Today I took the first step toward repairing the damage. I started looking for something with a straight edge to make the line work. What to use that could be removed? Yup...old X-acto blade. Hope it works.
Eric Macleod Posted February 18, 2020 Author Posted February 18, 2020 It worked! Not perfectly, but well enough given that this surface is going to be underneath the windshield, a piece of molding and behind the windshield. I am pleased.
Eric Macleod Posted February 20, 2020 Author Posted February 20, 2020 I think I have the front wheels figured out. I'm using some backing plates from the Monogram Mercedes 540 K and a metal front axle. It is simple and will be strong enough to hold all that resin and putty.
Eric Macleod Posted March 4, 2020 Author Posted March 4, 2020 I finally got back on this one. Today the job was fitting the windshield. I now have to make a header but I think I have the shape fairly close.
Eric Macleod Posted March 21, 2020 Author Posted March 21, 2020 I am back on this one with a goal of making a final push to complete it. I have tried cutting the cowl vents without success four times now but haven't given up...yet. I did push ahead with some work on the interior, which is really a pretty simple pattern with minimal fluctuations in the material. Hopefully more tomorrow.
