David Thibodeau Posted September 21, 2008 Posted September 21, 2008 So this box shows up at work from some dude in Indianapolis with a Revell of Germany 250 GTO kit they recently released a year ago. I was estatic needless to say. I have always loved this car. To me and others it was really the first supercar. Ferrari dominated with it in 1962 and 1963 until a certain Shelby Daytona came along 8) 8) I believe this is a rebox of the old Protar kit from Italy. it is fully detailed, body proportions are slightly square in the rear but very passable. This to me is one of those holy grail kits and I am looking so forward to doing it I painted it already!!! You all know me.. I love to paint!! Here is the main body all blocked to get rid of a few sink marks, primed and painted with "Hellrot" my red of choice for Ferrari's. Few pieces of trash need to be removed but for the most part it was a successful painting venture. Doors, trunk, and hood will all open. Scary thing is.... I forgot to cut out the hood vents for the air cleaners! I will CAREFULLY do this and put mesh behind them. Tires in the kit are horrible. I got these from a Shelby Cobra kit (oh how ironic) and mated them to the excellent replica kit borannis..... The ones on the right I am going to put on my John Deere model when I get to it....
David Thibodeau Posted September 21, 2008 Author Posted September 21, 2008 I polished a few dirty areas and blacked out the inside of the body and all panels Just like the real car was done. I also started adding a few body details... Oh and opened the hood vents! ;D I am going for the "uncivilized look" so the interior will be aluminum with the bright blue seats seen here. I also got a start on the engine. It was painted with Tamiya flat aluminum for that cast look. I also got a rough effect on the valve covers a la Ferrari... Seats installed. I will add the belts later... Engine is just in for a fit test, but the engine itself is done. I used aluminum tubing I cut for each velocity stack. Looks much better than the horrible kit ones. I used craft wire for the fuel rail and pro tech line for the flex line. Plug wires are also from pro tech. And a shot of the whole package at this point.
Raul_Perez Posted September 21, 2008 Posted September 21, 2008 Great paint and detail work, Dave!! I can't wait to see this one finished!! Later,
crispy Posted September 21, 2008 Posted September 21, 2008 David, gorgeous work! I was hoping you'd delve into a beautiful Italian. Look forward to the finished beauty. Chris
CAL Posted September 22, 2008 Posted September 22, 2008 David, gorgeous work! I was hoping you'd delve into a beautiful Italian. Look forward to the finished beauty. Chris Looks good, same kit I am building right now in the other 250 GTO thread.
Zoom Zoom Posted September 22, 2008 Posted September 22, 2008 Lookin' good there Dave; with a good dose of TLC it can result in a great model. Glad to see you ditched the offroad tires! Someone on another board just did a really nice build of the Protar but they left the tires as-is, and the wheels stuck out too far. Thin out the upper door frame, get the stance right, and the rest should take care of itself. I have the Protar, Gunze, Italeri and Fujimi GTO's. Just got the Fujimi today; it's a real sweetheart that will get built long before the others. They pretty much nailed it. Fujimi is kicking butt lately.

Doesn't matter too much what you tires you use the wheels are going to stick out to far without some work. The rear is pretty easy just drill the brakes out to the next step and the inner rim so you can slide them inboard more. The fronts are more work, but I have found that you can correct a lot of problems with shorting the upper are length. That will fix the huge positive camber to neutrual or negative camber, flip the knuckles side to side and this will drop the front down. Otherwise it tends to sit with the nose up. With the knuckles on the right sides the positive camber is horrible. The doors, I agree, are complete botched, and if you take them down to the line on the top of the frame that will be about right. However, then you need to fill in the roof so there isn't a huge gap. There is also no inner door panels or inner frame, which were pretty deep. I have seen one maybe two pictures of a 250 GTOs with these or like M&S tires. I haven't been lucky enough to find a sutable replacement without getting a whole wheel and tire replacement kit for $40 - $120 depending on how much you want to spend on a set of Borranis.
Nick F40 Posted October 7, 2008 Posted October 7, 2008 I have been watching this...and.....OH MY GOD!

David Thibodeau Posted October 31, 2008 Author Posted October 31, 2008 I was in a zone tonight..... this one is close to completion..... just needs windows and minor stuff.. I think I will display it all open.... Not bad for an old protar kit! Looks like the trunk wont be closing!!! The John deer tire hits the hinges!!
David Thibodeau Posted October 31, 2008 Author Posted October 31, 2008 (edited) And I did a little more as well...... The signature exhaust made from polished aluminum tubing....Big improvement over the kit exhaust. Also take a look at the shifter in these photos... it looks more to scale....... Bottom view..... Glass is all in as well..... Its close to completion..... such a classic "Pure thoroughbred" Ferrari.... Edited October 31, 2008 by David Thibodeau
E St. Kruiser50 Posted October 31, 2008 Posted October 31, 2008 Hey David Glad you did a thread on this . I have one of the old Protar kis, which are beautiful, except fot the tires, and you guy's pointers will help a lot . Thanks - Dave
crispy Posted October 31, 2008 Posted October 31, 2008 Look at that red paint just ooze all over. Fantastic work once again David! Chris
John E. Bowers Jr. Posted October 31, 2008 Posted October 31, 2008 (edited) Hi Dave, I never, ever thought I could offer you advice (unsolicited) on any one of your fantastic builds, but to me the shifter handle looks too tall and the knob too big. I have this same kit #07395 that happens to be next on my list to start, but I must clear some long lingering projects from the bench first. Your take on this one looks great and I have a couple of questions for you before I start my build... #1: At what height did you measure the scratchbuilt injection stacks? Measurements in millimeters or thousants is fine. #2: Your exaust treatment looks most exellent. Is that a kit detail or did you combine aluminum tubings for the final result? #3: I suspect the seat belts are photoetch and masking tape, well done. #4 Should the seats really be blue? At this point I have not even cracked the box open or done any real reaserch, but I go to bed with my mind swimming with ideas. It's guys like you that I thank for being able to turn to for help like this. J.B. Edited October 31, 2008 by John E. Bowers Jr.

John, If you look at the second set of photos I posted you will see the shifter has been changed, I just forgot to mention it! The seats in the Racing GTO's were a blue cloth. I just dullcoated mine after painting them Tamiya Brilliant blue. Alot of builders flock them but to me they look to fuzzy... The velocity stacks were simply duplicated from the kit parts size wise out of aluminum tubing. Seatbelts are paper painted with black sharpie and SMS PE hardware. As for the ride height...... That is simply where I glue the brakes to the wheels and cut off the locator pins and glue all assemblies to the stubs on the axles using index cards to get the car level and ride height proportional... Thanks everyone!! Edited October 31, 2008 by David Thibodeau

Thanks everyone!! Its great to know that you do this. I was not sure if it was an acceptible way to get the stance right but now I know. Thank you.
cruz Posted October 31, 2008 Posted October 31, 2008 Fantastic work as usual man, the paint is just sick. I would love to attack one of these myself, I also think is one of the most beautiful cars ever made. I will be buying the Fujimi kit soon, hopefully after a few projects I have in mind I will get to this one. Again, congratulations on a gorgeous build!!!
