I was looking for gel pens at Staples today, and I found these fine tip Sharpie pens. Would they work for pinstriping and fine detailing, or would they mess with the paint?

Thanks in advance.

I use those for red and yellow lenses. I tried using a black one for panel lines and discovered that Sharpies will run when covered with lacquer clear. Beware

In my experience gel-type pens do not dry on plastic or painted surfaces (so touching the ink will smudge it.  They are meant for paper (thus the "will not bleed" statement).

It is Sharpie permanent markers (which do dry on smooth surfaces) that will run when clear lacquer.

Thank all of you for the information. Pete, do you happen to know if Sharpie would run if coated with Future Floor Polish/Pledge Revive it?

I have never tried that, but I suspect that it will be ok (not run).  But I recommend testing this combination on a piece of plastic (sheet styrene, or maybe a plastic spoon), to be sure.

In the picture below, the black from the A pillar to the C pillar was done in Sharpie and cleared with Future.  There were no runs or streaking.

Exactly the information I was after. Thanks much.

The Future will work as a good barrier coat for jobs like this...plus you can USUALLY then spray your clear of choice over the top so you can actually polish, if you want/need to.

I’d be cautious of Future over Tamiya acrylics personally, I seemed to ALWAYS have it craze and crack on me if I laid it down too heavy, but it’s really useful as a kind of in-between coat to protect the paint underneath if you’re doing a bunch of masking or trying to bury something that might get hurt by subsequent coats
