doorsovdoon Posted July 22, 2020 Posted July 22, 2020 Right then, no cutting the roof off this one, box stock and nothing more! xD I was going to build this as the WCFL radio news car but this is a 67 model, not the 66 that was used. I have a 66 Olds but I'm waiting for a set of decals for that. In the meantime, here's the 67 442. I'm thinking of painting it white with satin black hood and dark red interior, and maybe changing the wheels.
TransAmMike Posted July 22, 2020 Posted July 22, 2020 Can't wait to watch the progress on this one. 66-67 4-4-2 probably my favorite 4-4-2.?
doorsovdoon Posted July 22, 2020 Author Posted July 22, 2020 Already coming along, guys:) I didn't want to spend too much time thinking of colour combos so I just went with my first option. White, black hood and red interior.
Deuces ll Posted July 22, 2020 Posted July 22, 2020 (edited) AMT has the '66, correct????....? If so, I may have that kit laying around..... Edited July 22, 2020 by Deuces ll
Deuces ll Posted July 22, 2020 Posted July 22, 2020 Nevermind.... I just answered my own question.... This is the kit I have....
doorsovdoon Posted July 22, 2020 Author Posted July 22, 2020 I do like the convertible. I was looking for that when I bought the 66 hardtop, couldn't find one anywhere in the UK.
doorsovdoon Posted July 22, 2020 Author Posted July 22, 2020 Just did the last coat of paint. I'm going to let it cure for a day or so before I mask off for the chassis detail. Last time, I think it was the Mercury Cyclone, I was too hasty and pulled the paint off when removing the tape. I'm going with different wheels on this, the tyres are from a 1961 Impala, the steel rims are from the 1962 Buick Electra and hub cap from the 1970 Galaxie 500 police car. I need to make three more cos the others are on my Yellow Cab! I'm getting good feels from this kit:) Usually at this point I'd be dealing with casting lines and badly fitting parts, but so far there really isn't anything to fault this kit. It reminds me of the Boss Mustang I did, that was a real nice kit to work with.

doorsovdoon Posted July 23, 2020 Author Posted July 23, 2020 I wanted to go with some different wheels on this and I love how the dog dish caps look on white steels, but I only have one, the other three are on my San Francisco Yellow cab, so I'll have to make the other three. Luckily, I have some experience in mould making, making plastic parts for classic cars, so making 1/25 scale hub caps will be a doddle for me... I hope! I've started a mould in an old jam jar lid which should be set and ready to use tomorrow. Fingers crossed, I've never mixed this low a volume of silicone before!

Since I barged into your other discussion of these 442 kits, I'll do it again with some more irrelevant information...? That '66 442 convertible has a nice air-conditioning system under the hood. There aren't too many model cars with vintage air-conditioning parts, so that's a neat touch. In real life, most people would have probably ordered A/C in a hardtop, not a convertible. In 1966 A/C was getting more popular in American cars, but it was still a pretty rare option. Especially in a high-performance muscle car like the 442. But the 442 was seen as a "gentleman's muscle car," so A/C was certainly possible. And AMT-ERTL made sure that if we wanted an air-conditioned hardtop, we'd have to buy both kits... The whole chassis of either 442 kit can be used to upgrade some old AMT kits with the metal axle and hole thru the engine block. Both of these kits originated in the 1990s, when AMT-ERTL was having a renaissance and issuing many new kits with great details.
Spottedlaurel Posted July 23, 2020 Posted July 23, 2020 I like the wheel choice, and it's great you have a transferable skill for making up parts. Seeing how well you've been getting through your builds recently I'm guessing you'll have this finished by Sunday maybe?!

I am doing a build very much like yours if you want the Old's dog dish caps Kevin at missing link resin makes them he has two deferent years.

Yes, I've been wanting to use this style of wheel for a while but been waiting for something that they look good on. Yeah, should be done by Sunday.
doorsovdoon Posted July 23, 2020 Author Posted July 23, 2020 Cheers, Richard. I'm ok for these caps but will be getting some similar to the Cutlass for the WCFL News car I have coming up.
doorsovdoon Posted July 23, 2020 Author Posted July 23, 2020 Thanks for the info, Michael. This kit also has A/C, I think? Two large corrugated pipes and a pump at the pulley. We never really got A/C in the UK until the 1980's and even then it was only on more up market cars. A/C wasn't really the norm here until the early 2000's!
doorsovdoon Posted July 23, 2020 Author Posted July 23, 2020 Finished making the hub caps last night, they turned out great. I've never made parts this small before, lol. The wheels I've chosen to use don't fit the back plate discs very well, they stick out, so I just cut the raised locating ring off and now fit ok, there's still room for the little disc that locks the wheels to the hub. I had to take the paint down on the car as I got a strange mottled effect, I painted it outside last night and it was extremely damp, probably moisture in the air. Small potatoes as they say.

I was kind of joking, but I suspect you probably will be done by then ?
doorsovdoon Posted July 23, 2020 Author Posted July 23, 2020 oh, Lol! Do I really work that fast? Unless it's a super detailed build like many I've seen on here I thought a few days is a normal time frame for my skill level.
doorsovdoon Posted July 23, 2020 Author Posted July 23, 2020 Ok, so nearly ready to start assembling this car but I got a massive paint reaction on the chassis, so had to take it back down to the plastic and start again. It's no big deal, I wasn't that keen on the white underside anyway. I'll just paint it all black with a dusting of the body colour.
doorsovdoon Posted July 24, 2020 Author Posted July 24, 2020 Just finished detailing the engine and various other parts. Nicely detailed engine in this kit. So far everything is falling together, really nice kit to work with.
stinkybritches Posted July 24, 2020 Posted July 24, 2020 Everything looks great, especially the front and rear bumpers.

doorsovdoon Posted July 24, 2020 Author Posted July 24, 2020 (edited) Love this kit, really nice to work with. I haven't had any fit issues so far except the chrome trim on the body, it's not really a fit issue to be honest, it's just the trim is so thin it's settled in the box. A bit of tape to hold it in place is all it needs. Interior tub is almost finished, I've held it together with tape cos sometimes the parts can creep before the glue sets. Hubs are a nice design, the drums fit loosely over the hubs and held in place by a small disc in the recess. Edited July 24, 2020 by doorsovdoon
