Raul_Perez Posted November 23, 2008 Posted November 23, 2008 (edited) I'm looking for an assessment of Revell's Superamerica Ferrari kit. My wife got one for me the other day, but I'm curious to hear any other builder's thoughts of the kit before I open it. I've built several Tamiya and Italiari Ferrari kits in the past, so it would be great if you could compare this kit to any of those. Thanks guys!! Later, Edited November 23, 2008 by Raul_Perez

From what I read there was some fitment problems under the hood, but it was minor. I am sure it's ok... like other ROG kits. It's not going to be a Tamiya kit, and probably a little south of Italeri kits. HTH
Lownslow Posted November 24, 2008 Posted November 24, 2008 im in progress ive heard it has some ride height issues but wont bother me much since its been adjusted

CAL Posted November 24, 2008 Posted November 24, 2008 Wow Raul, they are only $5 at Big Lots. If they have em. None of the five stores here had any and only two stores had any model kits at all. Both of those stores only had some 94 Impala Donks and 65 Wagon kits. Since, even those kits have disapeared.
Clay Posted November 24, 2008 Posted November 24, 2008 Just saying at the one store here they still have the 66 chevelle wagon, superamerica, and I believe some donk kits.
Scalefinishes Posted November 24, 2008 Posted November 24, 2008 I built one a few months ago, and loved it. Except for a few sink marks on the rear end, it was flawless. No issues with fit on any of the parts. The glass top actually opens and closes. Don't let the simplicity of the design fool you, you will have to make sure you finesse both the top and the body to get it to work smooth when its painted and installed. It will fit and work perfect. Have fun. Jameston
Nick F40 Posted November 24, 2008 Posted November 24, 2008 I've read and heard that you need to address some fit problems and get the ride height, other than that, it's Revell's rendering.

Like I said, I think I'll keep this one and give it a try. I built a lot of Ferrari models back in the 80s & 90s, but got into customs cars and haven't gone back, yet... Later,
Zoom Zoom Posted November 24, 2008 Posted November 24, 2008 I built one OOB for Scale Auto review; it's a nice kit. A couple minor sink marks on the body and if you whittle the front spindles down you can glue the front wheels up higher in the wheelwells where they belong. No memorable fit problems, the finished model looks impressive. Fujimi's kit is curbside and has the base Maranello wheels that the vast majority of Superamericas did not come with. Revell's wheels, even though they trap the brake disc in between inner/outer wheels, look nice. They'd look appropriate on a lot of Revell/Tamiya 360's and 430's and Fujimi 575 Maranellos. I wonder if Revell will ever do a Maranello from this kit? The rotating top operates perfectly. The frame can be a bit warped (one of the three kits I have was warped) but it's easily straightened. Hoods also may be prone to a little warp. The plastic is forgiving enough for you to bend it carefully back in the direction it belongs. It was a little tricky making tape patterns/cutting C/F decals for the frame, but it was worth the effort. Fun kit to build, definitely worth $5, even $15. The US issue is molded in white. It's preferable to the overpriced Revell AG issue in the flat box that's molded in red/gray. Revell USA's boxart certainly did it's best to scare people away from the kit. They could stand to make sure boxart models are attractively finished and photographed. I was drooling over a 1:1 Grigio Silverstone/Bordeaux Superamerica yesterday when I went to look at a Scuderia before it's delivered to it's new owner.
Raul_Perez Posted November 24, 2008 Author Posted November 24, 2008 Bob, That is BEAUTIFUL!!! What color did you paint it!! I love the color!! Thanks for sharing and thanks for the tips,
Zoom Zoom Posted November 24, 2008 Posted November 24, 2008 Thanks, it's Tamiya Mica Red over a gold base.
BigGary Posted November 24, 2008 Posted November 24, 2008 I heard about the $5 kits at Big Lots and jumped on it. I bought 5 of the '66 Chevelle wagon and 3 Ferraris. I sold two Ferraris to a friend. I didn't look at the Ferrari for about 3 months, but when I did, it picked my interest. I'll build it somewhere along the way. 3 of the wagons have given up their wheels and engines. Great Wheels! One has given its front suspension to a '55 Chevy pickup. One is in the works to learn to do BMF. Lots of practice there. Two might become part of a '66 Chevelle SS 396 Limo!? Gary
Merkur XR4Ti Posted November 24, 2008 Posted November 24, 2008 (edited) I've also built the Revell Superamerica, although naturally it pales in comparison to Bob's posted here. The ride height is the one thing I had a problem with on my build. I didn't correct it because it was too late by the time I noticed it. Everything else goes together very well and the glass top operates perfectly. I'm building a Fujimi 575 now and it sits a lot lower than Revell's kit. (Oddly enough, I'm making mine the same color as Bob made his; I'm using Testor's Honduras Maroon and Tamiya clear). Just make the correction and you'll be good to go. The Creative Explorer Posted November 24, 2008 Posted November 24, 2008 Revell USA's boxart certainly did it's best to scare people away from the kit. They could stand to make sure boxart models are attractively finished and photographed. Funny that you say so, because I stayed away from this kit as much as I could. Since the boxart showed me such a terrible car, but now seeing this build; I am going to get one
Raul_Perez Posted November 24, 2008 Author Posted November 24, 2008 Thanks, it's Tamiya Mica Red over a gold base. Thanks, Bob!! I hope that you don't mind, but I want to make mine look EXACTLY like yours!! That is just EXCELLENT!! Later,
bigphoto Posted November 25, 2008 Posted November 25, 2008 Bob, can you combine it with the Fujimi 575M to get one with an engine? especially if I find one for $5.00!!!!
Gregg Posted November 25, 2008 Posted November 25, 2008 We need to bring Mr. D over from the dark side........
Zoom Zoom Posted November 25, 2008 Posted November 25, 2008 (edited) Bob, can you combine it with the Fujimi 575M to get one with an engine? especially if I find one for $5.00!!!! Certainly! Darin Bastedo did a conversion body about a year ago intended to be cast in resin, but I haven't seen it hit the market. He combined the roof of the Fujimi 550 Maranello w/the Revell kit that allows you to build a full-detail Maranello. We need to bring Mr. D over from the dark side........ Hmmmm...I've got an idea or two that might work... Edited November 25, 2008 by Zoom Zoom
