My friend Marc's cat's brood. Her name is "Metro" ; so-called because he rescued her at the Metro L.A. Transit Yard where he works.

Chatons au Metro are 6 weeks old ; three boys (the red tabbies) and one girl ( tortie ) .

Dinner seemed sick all night the night before, but he was wound up and hit on the trail of something in the yard this morning.

If you were curious, he and Patty get along about as well as kerosene and an open flame. 🤣

And the kittens are still kittening. As far as I know Dinner has never even seen them.

Now my problem is Dinner 🤣

He's been the only cat in the house for the better part of 10 years, and he doesn't seem to be adjusting well. He seems really tense. I might need to formally introduce him to the kittens once Patty is back outside. She's obviously been a lot less tolerant of him since she moved the litter downstairs.

We introduced Ivan to Chloe when he was 8 weeks old and had all his shots. But she KNEW there was another cat in the house before that. She was with us for 4 years already.

Man... she did not like the new kitten one bit. We had to watch her with him. Probably why he is still skittish to this day.

We put her down almost 3 years ago, she had mandibular cancer. Ivan did not miss her, or didn't let on.

Got my hands on 2 of the 5.

I noticed there's no urine or feces in the area. So I got curious and googled it... Yeah, wish I hadn't because exactly what I thought was happening was happening. 🤣

That's what mums - "queens" - do with their babies. Felines - whether big cats ( Cougars, et al. ) or small cats ( our "domestic" companions ) - are clean by nature. They eliminate as many traces of their presence as possible, which includes burying scat and urine ; or, in the case of a queen , grooming her babies until they are capable of performing that on their own - including the ritualistic hand, face, and ear grooming which they partake in after eating anything. (BTW, notice how they shake their head when taking the first bites ? That's a hard-wired compulsion which emulates the tearing of flesh of their prey).

Momma cats keep the babies immaculate. Whatever it takes.

We had one with a stillborn kitten... well ... it disappeared when we checked on things. Momma cat eats the afterbirth, so eating a small kitten is no stretch.

Ivan's baby picture. This is where my son worked and we guess Ivan was 3 weeks old. This was in an old Corvette in a shed.

Eventually the momma cat got locked out of the shed and my son grabbed him before something bad happened to him.

Wished Patty a happy mother's Day as one of her brood tried using her head as a step ladder. 🤣

Meanwhile Dinner is enjoying the sun.

Our cat Chloe was nicknamed Bell... as in Dinner Bell. She ate anything in sight.

We had to feed Ivan in the bathroom or she pushed him aside after finishing her food.

With more people in the house then, she was a master at tricking others into giving her a 2nd breakfast.

Always thought it was interesting how most cats will eat when they're hungry. You could leave food out and it will eat whenever. But then you have this one that wants more and more.

Dogs will eat on and on so you have to give them a meal and that's it. Except my son has a little chihuahua and can leave food out and she will eat whenever she's hungry and doesn't abuse that privilege.

I never saw a cat that ate like Chloe. She didn't like most human food outside of cold cuts, cheese, pizza, whipped cream.

Wet food, she got a half small can 2x a day. There was dry food she grazed on. She would eat fast... eat Ivan's food too then barf it up at least a few times a week.

That's when we fed them separately. Now I'm down to just Ivan. He likes mainly dry food these days. I give him a third of a small can 2x a day. He's just not much of a foodie.

Mr. Ivan has rediscovered one of his cat beds. He has even been sleeping in it all night. Or that is what he tells me.
