Cool history.  Check out the story of Fageol trucks, which was later acquired by T. A. Peterman to become Peterbilt.  Fageol did some aluminum "weight-saving" construction in the 1930s, and IIRC they built a nearly all aluminum frame & body truck that ultimately did not save the amount of weight expected.  I'll have to scour my magazine archives for that story.
