I personally have a hard time finding auto shops that can do work to my satisfaction for the types of work I am unable to do by myself at home, this means I have to research shops and attempt to glean (hopefully) truthful reviews of potential establishments and then see if the shop I have chosen will perform to my expectations without gouging me for things not needed. That being said, the lack of craftsmen out there for any discipline is shrinking as fast as the cheap "apps" are being created. Some trade schools produce stars but most "graduate" students barely able to identify a wrench from a screwdriver. The desire to be excellent has been replaced with the desire to make do, and if by chance anyone attempts to push for "better than average" (and we all know that the average bar has sunk pretty low), then you're just asking too much. Regarding the "IT" issue, the problem may not always reside with the person actually doing the IT work, but instead may rest squarely on management/corporate greed not allocating sufficient resources to protect the companies from outside intrusions. That couldn't be said any better. Very few of the younger generation and some older people as well cares that much and just making do is ok. Trades are becoming a thing of the past especially since schools are taking auto shop, wood working and metal shop out. It's not looking good for this country in the not so distant future.
Tom Geiger Posted July 5, 2021 Posted July 5, 2021 I don’t believe it’s all that dismal. My father used to day, “Be patient with the common man. If it wasn’t for them, we wouldn’t look so good!” There was a quote from Ancient Greece.. may have been Plato, whining that the days youth was a lost cause and that was 2000 years ago! Just look around. There are sharp people you enjoy knowing. There’s the restaurant you go to because they’re on the ball. There’s the guy you take your car to because he’s both honest and good at what he does. We wouldn’t have several Coronavirus vaccines or two companies competing with space flights if everyone was an incompetent dolt. But incompetence or laziness is a way of life. We all know that modeler who builds sloppy models but whines that he should get trophies too! No doubt he’s that same way at work! He will never get it, he’s just wired differently.

Yes we still have some great people who take pride in their work but the bad people outnumber the good a 100 to 1.
Foghorn Leghorn Posted July 6, 2021 Posted July 6, 2021 Well, it ain't pretty but i don't see how it could leak with that all lead on there ?

And unfortunately, there's a very high percentage of the population who simply can't tell quality from crappola. To paraphrase Mr. Geiger, they will never get it, they're just wired differently. That's the reason a true craftsman doesn't work to please his clients or his audience...whatever field he works in. He does what he does to please himself, to work up to his own standard of excellence, and isn't centered on approval or praise from others. Edited July 6, 2021 by Ace-Garageguy CLARITY 1
HomerS Posted July 7, 2021 Posted July 7, 2021 Nowadays it's all about the fees and additional charges...... Called someone to install a garage door and they wouldn't do it unless I bought the door through them as well Plumber adds truck charge to drive to the job site, plus a 'fuel surcharge' Buy a 1/18 die cast at Sam's and they offer a one year warrant for $4.99?? Don't touch a bank account for a couple months, bank adds a monthly maintenance fee Sporting event/concert you can print your own ticket so TicketBasturd adds a convenience fee for them doing nothing
