ec9000 Posted September 1, 2021 Posted September 1, 2021 I polished a recent model with Novus 2. I have decided that I want to clearcoat. I already have decals on so I don't want to clean with anything very harsh. Has anyone had experience painting directly over a Novus2 polished surface? Thanks for any input
Snake45 Posted September 1, 2021 Posted September 1, 2021 Check the label and see if it has silicone in it. If it does, you probably won't be able to paint over it. I polish with Wright's Silver Cream, a silver polish that is a mild, water-based abrasive with no chemical component. I could probably paint after polishing with that, but admit that I've never tried. Time to do a spoon test. Polish a plastic spoon or junk body with your Novus and see if it'll take the clearcoat.
SfanGoch Posted September 1, 2021 Posted September 1, 2021 Novus doesn't list the ingredients on the bottles; but, both Novus 1 and 2 contain silicone. Additionally, Novus 1 contains alcohol (less than 5%). Novus 1 SDS Novus 2 SDS
Zippi Posted September 1, 2021 Posted September 1, 2021 (edited) I just did the spoon test Snake spoke of. I don't know what clear your planning on using but I used Rust-Oleum Clear Gloss Enamel and Acrylic Lacquer. I polished each spoon with Novus 2 before spraying the clear. This was after one coat. I applied two coats (heavy) and the results were still the same. It gave it a somewhat of a dull finish. Hope this helps. Edited September 1, 2021 by Zippi
ec9000 Posted September 1, 2021 Author Posted September 1, 2021 Thanks for all the quick responses. Spoon test suggestion was helpful. I just did my own spoon test with Mr. Premium gloss topcoat and no immediate adverse reaction.
