Straightliner59 Posted July 27, 2023 Posted July 27, 2023 This is some very fine work, Mr. Sapiro! It's illustrative of why you won the Wingrove. Congratulations, my friend! I'm looking forward to the day this one's ready to leave a pair of gleaming, alloy aircars stranded at a one-lane bridge. 1
absmiami Posted July 29, 2023 Author Posted July 29, 2023 The “Wingrove” was a bit of an upset - the big scale builds by Derr and Jones were more in the Wingrove spirit - but i think the Judges wanted to reward some of the good 24th and 25th sc work in the last show - would love to have seen the judging sheets … 1
absmiami Posted July 29, 2023 Author Posted July 29, 2023 Onward… the subframe that supports the bodywork is also clearly visible in the trunk - so ive made a plastic deck fr Evergreen and liquid glued .035 Evergreen rod to the deck with a few more details …. The curved rail is .08 lead wire - superglued - Bout time for the fuel tank …

I've always felt that large scale models should be completely separate. As much as you and I would like to think, otherwise, we can't realistically put quite the amount of details that can be installed in anything 1/12 or 1/8 scale, or even 1/16. It's not a level playing field. Anyway, you may be right that they were "spreading the wealth", so to speak, but it in no way diminishes the accomplishment, in my eyes. On another note, I am dangerously close to impulsively purchasing one of Fernando's 166s. "What the heck? It's only $150 bucks, or so!"
absmiami Posted July 30, 2023 Author Posted July 30, 2023 I like Pinto’s kits - haven’t built one yet - but i will …. If you get one of his early Ferraris I’m going to to tempt you with an engine upgrade … the fuel tank is being cut from two peices of Renshape - the Permi-grit file are good for sanding this stuff …
absmiami Posted July 30, 2023 Author Posted July 30, 2023 This looks good - but will the trunk close ?!
absmiami Posted July 30, 2023 Author Posted July 30, 2023 Nope - but ill remove about 1/16 fr the base of the tank - that should do it … 1
Pierre Rivard Posted July 30, 2023 Posted July 30, 2023 Looks better and better Andy. That semi-curbside is getting so much detailing you might as well fabricate a complete chassis. No pressure but...
absmiami Posted July 30, 2023 Author Posted July 30, 2023 Keeping the chassis plate w some improvements - here’s why - 1
absmiami Posted July 30, 2023 Author Posted July 30, 2023 The fuel cap sits on top of the tank - got to open the trunk to re-fuel …. This was 1949 …. Will the cap interfere with the trunk line ?
absmiami Posted July 30, 2023 Author Posted July 30, 2023 So i’m trimming the tank again - in two dimensions -
absmiami Posted July 30, 2023 Author Posted July 30, 2023 Skinning the tank in .080 aluminum - glued to the Renshape w a thin layer of gorilla glue - and ive made a false tank front fr .030 Evergreen - so the tank will have a lip with a rivet pattern..
absmiami Posted July 31, 2023 Author Posted July 31, 2023 the .080 alu sheet is thin enough to mark a rivet pattern from the back side - using this rivet tool - which is something you never need - until you do … 2
Straightliner59 Posted July 31, 2023 Posted July 31, 2023 Love that! Aluminum is the best thing to use, to represent aluminum!?
absmiami Posted July 31, 2023 Author Posted July 31, 2023 Thats because its …. Aluminum … Archer has taken down its on line store - thats a bummer - micro Mark sells similar rivet sheets - but I’m a big fan of Woody’s stuff … 1
Pierre Rivard Posted July 31, 2023 Posted July 31, 2023 Oh Andy, you really have to take your act on the road. Endless possibilities. I love that Thank... Ok I guess I'm not joining the act... ?
absmiami Posted August 4, 2023 Author Posted August 4, 2023 Took a little off the bottom of the fuel cap - a little off the bottom of the tank - and then ground a shallow depression in the trunk for the cap … 3
