Transmission color

What is the correct factory color for the manual transmission on a 56 Ford F100?

I've seen them either painted a dull black or unfinished. This was on original trucks I've pulled parts from that had been in a junkyard for years.

When unfinished,  steel or aluminum?

56 Ford would more than likely be steel or cast iron color.

Thanks guys. I was thinking along  those lines.

Usually these would have had very little to no overspray of paint when new. The ones I remember putting hands on were anything from surface rust to very greasy depending on the condition of the seals.
