The other day at Walmart I saw a Mini in an amazing red paint job. It was like candy red over chrome, or like a Hot Wheels (I think I've seen HWs finished like this), or maybe like an old-school Christmas tree glass ornament. Lay some red Sharpie on a chrome model part--that's what the whole car looked like.  Came home and researched and it doesn't seem to be factory. First paint job I've ever seen like like this. Is this a new thing? What's the deal?

Mazda has a factory color that sounds very much like this - it's called Soul Red and it's a candy over a REALLY reflective silver...looks pretty much like what you're describing when you see it in real life - like candy over chrome:

That picture doesn't really do the color justice - but if you ever see it in bright sunlight they GLOW, it's a beautiful color.

Sucks if you get a stone chip though, apparently - its really hard to touch in and repair

I was going to mention the wrap idea also. A local "tint shop" in the area has done several of these that I have seen ranging from a flat to a mirror blue on one of their company trucks. When you get tired of it you can go back to the original color or do it in another color.

My 2019 GT/CS would look cool in that shade of red....?

There is a “blue chrome” late model Ford Mustang in the Austin, TX area. I suspect it is a wrap. I do love that factory Mazda red. Gosh it looks good.
